CLASSIC DESIGN WEEK. PIC ONE - DEATH STAR CHASM


Out in the UK this week is the long-awaited, new nice price edition of the lavish and informative STAR WARS: BLUEPRINTS book by J.W. Rinzler, available from TITAN BOOKS. In celebration of the must-have title, we're having a week-long celebration of some of the six films classic production designs.

Today, we start with one of Production Designer John Barry's impressive sets for STAR WARS, at Elstree Studios in April/May 1976- the Death Star chasm area where Luke and Leia would make movie magic in their famous swing across. This set, like many others for the all-important first movie, were built in a way that they could be cleverly and budget savingly rearranged and set dressed into becoming other parts of the Imperial battle station, like the Tractor Beam and cannon emplacements.
