'STAR WARS' AT 40: ON CAPTURE ROAD!
It had worked okay in tests back at the studios of Elstree, London, but practical effects supervisor John Stears' unique radio controlled version of Artoo Detoo (aka the three legged version) suffered major problems on location in the early weeks of STAR WARS filming in Tunisia during March 1976, in some cases an alternate version would be used that would be pulled along via unseen on screen chicken wire. Here, covered with multiple cameras led by George Lucas, on its way to capture by those sneaky but loveable little rogues the Jawas, the controlled creation seems to be trundling on satisfactorily in this now famous canyon location, though additionally helped by smooth boards preventing its wheels from damage and contamination on the rocky surface.
