AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: A DISRUPTED PATROL! (TAUNTAUN FILMING)

At the perfect natural location for filming the Hoth ice planet scenes, early filming at Finse, Norway during March 1979 sees Mark Hamill atop the partial practical Tauntaun head/neck puppet, for the lead-up to where he and his beast being brutally attacked by the Wampa.

Prior to filming, the crew at one of their two base camps readies the full-size Tauntaun in these shots.

In the warmer climes of the base camp hut, Mark Hamill goes through his scenes with Irvin Kershner.

To save practical time and avoid the cold weather as much as possible, Hamill rehearses the scene indoors with Kershner and the crew.
The full-size Tauntaun is transported to the filming site.

In the saddle, and in the saddle for Luke and the Tauntaun operator.

A deleted moment as Luke senses worry from his Tauntaun.

Filming Luke's close-ups as the full-size Tauntaun stands to one side at the location.

Alternate shots of Luke and Tauntaun filmed in poor weather conditions.
