AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: THE TAUNTAUN - PART ONE: DEVELOPMENT

Maquette of Rebel rider and Tauntaun by Phil Tippett.

The final design and onscreen appearance/realization of the Tauntaun may have looked more user friendly to both viewers and the Rebel Alliance heroes located at Echo Base on Hoth, but in The Empire Strikes Back's special effects pre-production phase at ILM, there were all kinds of ideas as to how the creature should look. Here's a fascinating selection of intriguing curiosities...

Early concepts of the beast of burden.

More head maquettes and a full length version.

Three diverse head designs for the Tauntaun.

Design work for a lizard/bird type creature, circa August 1978.

Another exemplary McQuarrie piece.

Approaching its final design.

A more lizard-like development.
