AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: PREPARING THE BOARDING PARTY!

The scene between Vader and Piett as originally filmed but flipped in editing of the final film. Image: Kurtz/Joiner Archive.

It's only a short matter of time before the crew of the Millennium Falcon are once more captured, as Admiral Piett confirms to Darth Vader that the smuggling ship's Hyperdrive has once more been deactivated, secretly without the knowledge of the now traitorous Lando Calrissian.

We reckon that the young Lieutenant opposite Piett, who delivers one line of dialogue, must have been a competition winner of some kind, or family member of the production team in a cameo, as he looks incredibly young on screen to be in that rank.

From the Special Edition version of 2004 - the flipped image now featured Imperial insignia changed to the correct positions on the costumes via CGI.

Dave Prowse is kept cool under via the grill in his helmet by his on set 'mother' - John Birkinshaw (Costuming Assistant).

AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: DARK LORD'S FURY!

AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: VADER UNMASKED!

A disturbed Vader, his helmet having been temporarily removed within his meditation chamber, receives news from a nervous-for-his-life Admiral Piett (Kenneth Colley) about the Falcon's hiding in the asteroid belt.

Dave Prowse played the disfigured Vader in this scene, with make-up applications provided by Stuart Freeborn and his team. Some footage from the meditation scene was shot by Irvin Kershner and possibly by Gary Kurtz too ,with his second unit, for extra pick-ups. In total, popular character actor Colley would spend a week working on the film for his scenes set on the Star Destroyer.

Norman Reynolds concept art for disfigured Vader.

Built on Stage 5, Darth Vader’s meditation chamber included a chair and spherical consoles, plus a mechanized arm that holds his helmet in place- in one memorable scene, David Prowse wears the make-up (provided by Stuart Freeborn's and his team) of the disfigured Vader before being interrupted by Admiral Piett. Kershner shoots the scene carefully, only wanting a small amount of Vader’s destroyed features being shown on screen-he wants the audiences to fill in the blanks as to how horrific the rest of the character’s injuries are. The filmed scene ends differently to the one seen on screen-when Vader says “I want that ship not excuses,” he had dialogue: “How long until you can have Skywalker and the others in the Millennium Falcon before me?” When Veers replies, “Soon, Lord Vader”, Vader then says ominously, “Yes, Admiral…soon.” It would then have cut to the filmed scene with the chamber firmly closing shut, sealing Vader back into his thoughts.

Close in shot of the disfiguring make-up.

In the filming of the scene, Prowse, knowing his voice was being redubbed, used to make the most of any potential on-set humour, recalling to Starlog magazine in 1980: “When I was wearing the mask on the set, people had difficulty hearing me, so I used to change my dialogue. I’d take a line like, “The asteroids do not concern me, I want that ship,” and change it to, “Hemorrhoids do not concern me, I need a sh=t.”

As filming continues, Prowse, asked if he reckons Darth Vader keeps fit, replies: “He’s single-minded. You’ve got to be strong to be evil. In any case, the Devil looks after him.”

AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: "SET YOUR COURSE FOR THE HOTH SYSTEM"!

Darth Vader returns, searching for Luke Skywalker and his hidden Rebel Alliance fraction.

Darth Vader's determination that the Imperial Probe Droid dispersion will find the Rebels has paid off, with footage from the sixth planet in the barren, uncharted Hoth system revealing footage of a power generator and a Snowspeeder. Despite the concerns of the incompetent Admiral Ozzel, the Imperial Death Fleet is soon on its way there, ready for cold weather warfare!

The Super Star Destroyer bridge expanded with reverse footage/spilt screen and a matte painting.

Vader looks at the Hoth probe droid footage with Captain Piett (Kenneth Colley).

Admiral Ozzel (Michael Sheard) and General Veers (Julian Glover) arrive on the bridge.

The foolish Admiral Ozzel, so well played by sci-fi film/TV fan favourite Michael Sheard.

The nervous officers watch the departing Vader from the bridge.

A kiss for a Dark Lord!

General views of the Star Destroyer bridge set, which used existing, in-UK storage pieces of set from the Death Star of the original Star Wars (notably the hangar control room), was expanded in size during production and post production with matte shots and reversing the pit section from left to right. Once again, futuristic UK set decorator/artist Harry Lange was at work creating the numerous control panels and keeping the visual continuity previously established.

CLASSIC IMAGE: FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!

The Imperial Death Squadron has incredulously failed to capture the Millennium Falcon. Darth Vader is furious-Luke Skywalker and his Rebel friends must be captured at all costs, even if it means sacrificing his commanding officers to do it!

CLASSIC IMAGE: TO TALK TO THE EMPEROR...

With his Imperial fleet's search of the dangerous Hoth system asteroid belt- for the missing Millennium Falcon- continuing, Darth Vader is forced to take a pause in his personal mission to receive a transmission from his master, the Emperor, in another classic scene from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

BEHIND THE SCENES IMAGE: REBEL SURPRISE!

On the blue screened Super Star Destroyer Bridge set, Kenneth Colley as Admiral Piett (left) and one of his Star Destroyer Captains (played by UK actor Pip Miller: his voice in the final film was re-dubbed by a US actor (name unknown) in Post-Production. The character would later be given the EU name of Gherant), get ready to film their observations of the Imperial trap newly sprung on the Rebel Fleet above Endor, in a behind the scenes image from the shooting of REVENGE OF THE JEDI, somewhere between February and April 1982.

CLASSIC IMAGE: PIETT'S PROGRESS!

Playing one of the few senior officers luckily not strangled by Darth Vader, and despite being on the side of the baddies as an Imperial, popular British actor Kenneth Colley would have a memorable supporting role, enjoyed by STAR WARS fans worldwide, as Admiral Piett in both THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (posing for the above publicity and costume reference image) and RETURN OF THE JEDI-coming back for the latter film because Lucas realised just how popular he'd become as Piett with the fans three years earlier...

CLASSIC IMAGE: ACTIVATING A BOUNTY!

Here's a rare April 1979 ELSTREE shot - and if anybody has this in its full photo entirety, and in better quality, please get in touch- that I don't remember in the film, with Darth Vader (David Prowse) in the assembled bounty hunter line stopping near Bossk (Alan Harris), whilst an intimidated Admiral Piett (Kenneth Colley) looks up. I'm assuming the pic was taken in final camera rehearsal for the interior Imperial Super Star Destroyer bridge scene, but its great nonetheless.
