CLASSIC ART: CLASHING 'SABERS!

The lightsabers used by the Jedi Knights of the Old Republic may have passed into history by the time of the original Star Wars' story showcasing Rebellion vs Empire, but the emergence of Jedi-to-be Luke Skywalker, and his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi's duel with his former pupil Darth Vader, soon make the weapons iconic and a perfect representation of good vs evil for this unused American poster concept art from 1976/77.

If anyone knows the artist (I assume it's Tom Jung), please get on touch...

AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: A LITTLE HAND CRAFTING!

The Freeborn workshop at Elstree not only has to come up with a variety of creatures for the first Star Wars sequel but also has to do lots of additional and rather yucky duties for the human cast, firstly doing a face cast of Harrison Ford for his carbonite visage, then a recreation of Mark Hamill's lightsaber holding hand for the moment when our hero becomes an amputee from Darth Vader's own blade.

Hamill poses for some fun shots at Stuart Freeborn's lab!

For the scene before the all-important reveal, where Luke loses his lightsaber hand, a special dummy hand was created by Stuart Freeborn. He recalled to STAR WARS INSIDER in 2008: “We made (Luke’s hand) from hardened resin holding the handle of his sword that contained a cable release. The two inner parts were painted red to give a realistic flesh colour. You always have to be prepared to make odd little things like that on film!”

A look at the finished dummy hand.

THE 'PHANTOM' AT TWENTY: LIGHTSABER DAY!

The big moment has arrived for Ewan McGregor, watched by Nick Gillard and Ty Teiger.

"So we walked down there (to the prop room), and then the props guy came out with this big wooden box... Now I romanticise this meeting, I must warn you... but I remember it was this big wooden box, with padlocks on it, which he unlocked. He said, "Are you ready?" And I said, "Yeah." He opened it up and there was like 9 or 10 different lightsaber handles. It was like going to buy a Ferrari and trying to choose which model you like!"

"There were all different shapes (of lightsabers). I mean, if you look in the film you'll see that Liam Neeson's lightsaber handle is different shaped than mine. I, however, got the first choice, and I got the sexier one!"

Ewan McGregor - Entertainment Tonight web interview - May 1999

"It was an extraordinary kind of moment. I lost myself in it. I got to choose my own lightsaber. It's a sexy one, of course."

Ewan McGregor - Empire magazine - August 1999

THE 'PHANTOM' AT TWENTY: YOUR WEAPON FOR LIFE!

Having rescued him from pursuant Battle Droids, Qui-Gon Jinn mildly scolds his Padawan learner Obi-Wan Kenobi for not looking after his protective Jedi weapon, its power temporarily unresponsive after swamp water submergence. An early deleted scene and interesting character moment on Naboo which, surprisingly, has not so far been released on DVD or Blu-ray.

This scene would be echoed between Master Kenobi and his own apprentice Anakin Skywalker ten years later, during events of EPISODE II- "This weapon is your life!"

The idea of a lightsaber having to be 'charged up' was conceived by George Lucas with Alan Dean Foster for the classic first Expanded Universe novel, Splinter of the Mind's Eye, back in 1978.

"George was always keen to say that this was a character (Obi-Wan) in development. Because a lot of the time I'd just be behind Liam here, or here... And George would say, "Now listen, this is a character in development, so by the time we get to the second movie..." And I always knew that was the case. But the way he described it was that he was an apprentice Jedi Knight, but he was very straight, very "by the book," and was frustrated by his master, who bent the rules."

Ewan McGregor - Entertainment Tonight TV/Internet interview - 1999

CLASSIC IMAGE: MACE WINDU - 'BMF'!

With a specially inscribed 'BMF' ('Bad Motherf++ker') on his unique one-of-a-kind lightsaber hilt, and a blade emitted to the colour purple (his favourite colour, and designed so that the actor could single himself out in an action sequence), Samuel L. Jackson IS Mace Windu- his turn in the Star Wars action spotlight finally 'good to G-O' for EPISODE II.

CLASSIC IMAGE: THE 'SABER AND THE VALIANT!

Posed publicity image for Lucasfilm by Mathew Rolston.

Bringing enthusiasm and a then youthful modern vibe to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, yet also respectful to the past work established for the Classic trilogy by Sir Alec Guinness, Ewan McGregor made the part of the emerging, youthful Jedi Padawan his own for The Phantom Menace, and quickly won the appreciation of STAR WARS fans worldwide, especially children, soon in awe of his well-honed lightsaber-wielding skills against Darth Maul.

The Scottish actor made a terrific surprise appearance for SW fans during a 2017 screening marathon in California:

EPISODE VIII: WHAT HAPPENED NEXT...

SPOILERS! On Skellig Island in late 2015, before The Force Awakens had even been released, its original finale scene between Rey and Luke Skywalker, previously handled by J.J. Abrams, would be partially reshot to create continuity with the start of VIII. Interestingly, a specific prior moment in the VII script with Luke and Rey was removed, at Rian Johnson's request, because it clashed with his upcoming work on VIII, and linked to Luke's Jedi powers. Additionally, Abrams version had BB-8 go to Ahch-To instead of R2, the latter replacing the former via ILM wizadry. This also was changed in request by Johnson- definitely the right creative/character move.

As Rey keenly hold his father's lightsaber out to him, The Force Awakens ends with Luke's face clearly trepidatious, or moved, or at least aware of something. Yet, The Last Jedi doesn't continue from that. In fact, many worldwide die-hard SW fans felt understandably shocked and betrayed when Luke throws the lightsaber so casually over his shoulder-actions which they felt were greatly out of character for the Classic Trilogy hero created by Lucas and brought to life by Hamill...

On location at Skellig Island.

It's also never explained in VIII why Luke is wearing his "Sunday Best" Jedi robes at the end of VII when the island's harsh living conditions went against this in VIII. Unless, speculation-wise, he knew that company linked to the Force, or at least Han or Leia, were coming to visit him...

EPISODE VIII: THE NEXT 'HOPE'?

On one of the secluded mountain peak islands of Ahch-To, Rey continues to develop her lightsaber mastery, hoping that, if Luke Skywalker chooses not to train her, that the nature and power of the Force on this unique planet might at least help shine a light on her future abilities and destiny, in this moment from The Last Jedi.

EPISODE VIII: REY THE JEDI?

Whether or not these have already fully appeared online I don't know, but here's two great costume reference/marketing shots nonetheless of the new look Rey, as played by Daisy Ridley, looking cooler and more Jedi-like than ever in the face of her ongoing encounter with the mysterious and emotionally haunted Luke Skywalker, for the upcoming The Last Jedi.

OUT NOW IN THE UK: THE CLASSIC TRILOGY AND 'TFA' JUNIOR NOVELS!

Just in time for the 40th Anniversary of George Lucas's inspired opus mythology, with each title blessed with a specific character lightsaber (a lovely nod to one of the early teaser posters to Return of the Jedi), young UK readers can join in the celebratory fun and relive in young novel form, courtesy of EGMONT/DISNEY, the three films that started it all via their Special Edition adapted personas, from that talented literary imagineer and longtime LUCAS BOOKS collaborator Ryder Windham, bringing the stories of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, to blistering, fast paced form, whilst also giving additional perspectives and character oversights to all our main heroes and villains. A pleasing reprint tribute for the continuing book collection.

2015's The Force Awakens junior novel from Michael Kogge, a satisfying telling with additional scenes, also gets a reprinting from EGMONT in this anniversary format, with Kylo Ren's fiery cyberpunk-esque lightsaber gracing that book's cover.

'STAR WARS' AT 40: CONFRONTATION OF LIGHT AND DARK

"You can't win, Darth. If my blade should find its mark, you will cease to exist. But I warn you, if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine..."

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Orange denotes filmed but cut dialogue)

After weeks of prior rehearsal/choreography, the period of May 27th to June 1st, 1976 sees the filming at Elstree of the iconic first lightsaber duel seen in a STAR WARS movie - the conflict between Obi-Wan Kenobi and his former pupil, Darth Vader.

Posed publicity image with the light reflective blades.

The hilt-rotating, light reflecting tape lightsaber blades used by Sir Alec Guinness and David Prowse were incredibly fragile- bits can literally be seen breaking off them if you look carefully at the film, and many replacement blades had to used after continued snapping. Wooden swords were also used for studio rehearsals and posed publicity imagery, with the lit blade energy airbrushed on to selected shots a year later. As Dave Prowse, in the hard to see and bulky to wear Vader costume, fought Obi-Wan, the sequence where the two are close-in and Vader pushes Obi-Wan away saw the muscleman/actor unintentionally send Sir Alec flying across the corridor floor. Thankfully, he was was winded rather than sustaining any injuries.

Despite his filmic demise, Guinness was aware that he would come back later to do the Force "ghost" voice of Kenobi aiding Luke in the Death Star space battle, and the fact that, even then (and before the film was even completed), that there was the vague potential for a sequel and the character's return in some capacity.

Filming the start of the duel.

Jamie Harcourt holds the clapperboard as the latter portion of the scene is filmed again.

In the film's later post production editing some parts of the sequence are noticeably flipped.

The start of the duel shot from the alternate angle.

Forty years on, many modern day STAR WARS fans have dismissed this original duel as slow and lacking excitement in comparison to the more sophisticated lightsaber clashes of the later films, but I say they don't know what they're talking about. Back in 1977, this sequence was good enough to capture the hearts and minds of millions of spellbound fans, launching their collective imaginations about the past history between Obi-Wan and Darth, and generating lots of imitative action from kids in playgrounds clashing with invisible laser swords and making Ben Burtt's unique humming sound...

One notable re-edit of this sequence can be found in fan film-maker Adywan's STAR WARS REVISITED, where he literally expands/revises the opening part of the duel in a very impressive way, scene flipping footage to further and impressive effect.
