'STAR WARS' AT 45 - DANIELS OF THE DESERT!

Daniels checks the shooting script on the first day's filming.

For a singular day at least treated with care and respect by the behind the scenes crew and Tunisian extras within this physically limiting and painful costume, a youthful Anthony Daniels catches up with some of the script changes in a brief filming break on location for the original Star Wars, on the first principal photography day at the Nefta wastelands of Tunisia in March 1976. Having early trouble with the finished shooting script, Daniels additional lack of film experience at that time worries him- on the first shooting day it takes him three times before he can his dialogue about Vaporators correctly, though George Lucas isn't ultimately worried because he knows the actor's voice will need redubbing in post production.

With all the discomforts to come over the next five months of filming, Daniels would soon consider his weekly fee of £250 a paltry sum.

From that first unique day, who can forget the original first posed publicity images of Daniels as Threepio alongside Artoo Detoo on location in Tunisia. at the Lars Homestead? Think Artoo looks a bit different in the shots than he ultimately does in the film? Well, that's because the Artoo seen below would be the lightweight mock-up spare. moved about on piano wire, originally built for emergency use by Roger Christian (under instruction from Production Designer John Barry), just in case the remote controlled one, conceived and operated by UK Practical Effects Supervisor John Stears, broke down, which it ultimately and often did during the early days on location filming!

Daniels as Threepio alongside the piano wire-operated 'dummy' version of Artoo, on location in Tunisia for the film's early, now iconic, publicity images.

INTRODUCING 'STAR WARS' GREATEST AMBASSADOR!

Photoplay magazine introduces Star Wars to UK readers!

Growing up as a seven-year old within a family of major-league cinema and Hollywood celebrity addicts, the regular issue of the UK/US magazine Photoplay was a must-have purchase event each month. It was with the September 1977 issue, bought one Sunday at the local newsagent, that I saw the first coverage (to me at least!) of the then eagerly-anticipated-in-the-UK movie that was Star Wars. The moment I saw the first marvellous B/W picture of the movie, used full page to promote its then current mega-success in America, and especially showcasing the unique droids themselves in the human-like C-3PO and the squat but strangely cute R2-D2 (what did those names of theirs truly signify, I wondered...?), then turned the next few pages after to see more incredible visual wonders the likes of which I'd never seen before, I knew I was totally, immediately hooked!

The full version of the classic 1977 publicity image.

This wasn't just one of a series of firsts for me linked to the soon-impact of Star Wars, though. With regards to the all-important man bringing Threepio uniquely, and so evocatively, to life in talented British actor Anthony Daniels, he would have the unique distinction of being the first actor officially hired to work on the film, and be the first actor making regular visits to the Lucasfilm/FOX-hired Elstree Studios at the unique start of the project's late 1975 post production cycle and the urgently needed creation of the droids. When "The Star Wars" started rolling on location in Tunisia by Spring 1976, it was also Daniels who had his first major scene filmed at the Lars Homestead Droid Auction- of which iconic cinema and cinema character history was made, and whose publicity images taken therein would soon make him (and comrade Artoo) the original, ultimate visual identity ambassador for the franchise...

Discover more about Anthony Daniels incredible involvement in the saga over forty-two unforgettable years, from extraordinary beginnings to satisfying closure with 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, via his hugely enjoyable new autobiography which reveals the on screen genesis of the protocol droid's life in the saga, and the many incredible life journeys and incidents that the man inside him has been involved with thanks to that golden alter-ego best friend of his. I am C-3PO - The Inside Story is out now from DK Books and has deservedly received rave reviews for its playful humour, candour and vintage reminisces, and it includes a lovely selection of accompanying colour imagery across his incredible contributions linked to the saga.

AFTER IMAGE. ANTHONY DANIELS: MY LIFE WITH THREEPIO!

Man and machine in perfect harmony. Anthony Daniels and his incredible lifetime friend. Image: STARWARS.COM

Alas, poor Threepio! I knew him well.

He's portrayed the character on and off for over forty-plus years, and now its time for actor and Star Wars icon Anthony Daniels to say goodbye to his golden friend C-3PO within his cinematic realm, as The Rise of Skywalker prepares to reveal the final destiny of the universe's most popular protocol droid- a truly unique and faithful hero to his friends both human, alien and robot, even if he was mostly out of his dizzying depth in the action and heady drama of the saga!

A classy raconteur right from the early days of the franchise's publicity turns, Daniels' funny, sublime, insightful and anecdote-packed life inside that often uncomfortable golden costume, from Tunisia, 1976 to Jordan, 2018, across nine films, is revealed in his new autobiography: I Am C-3PO - The Inside Story, out now from DK Books. And an essential read, charting an incredible and very personal film-making journey, it will surely be...

BEHIND THE SCENES: LIFE IN THE SHELL!

It's a very busy day within the Millennium Falcon hold set at Elstree Studios, circa Summer 1979, as droids Threepio and Artoo are reunited under the most difficult and emotional circumstance - the former recovering both mentally and physically from the ordeals and tribulations of the Imperial difficulties at Bespin, the latter having the job of finally putting his 'Golden Rod' friend firmly back in one piece!

With Mark Hamill in the distance sitting down by the holo chess table talking to First Assistant Director David Tomblin, this is a rare behind the scenes shot of Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker together during The Empire Strikes Back's long and often arduous filming.

Anthony Daniels will be reminiscing/revealing his incredible cinematic life story playing Threepio, as well as what it's ultimately like being, and being inside, such an important pop culture favourite of such a unique franchise as Star Wars - for over four decades now - in his upcoming perspective book, the eagerly-awaited I am C-3PO - The Inside Story. A witty and fascinating read surely awaits, available in the UK October 31st, published by DK Books.

'SOLO': PATROLLING THE MEAN STREETS!

Return of the Jedi back in 1983 introduced us to the very cool Imperial Speeder Bike pilots operating within the forests of the Endor moon. Now, Solo: A Star Wars Story gives us a similar yet old/new variant on duty at the industrial climes of Corellia - the Imperial Patrol Trooper, of which one of its legion will soon (unluckily) find himself trying to catch-up with that rogue speed demon Han Solo and his partner Qi'ra, both on the run from the White Worm crime gang, during the film's exciting opening chase sequence.

'SOLO': A LASTING FIRST IMPRESSION!

It's not exactly the greatest of ways to meet the being who will be your best friend and co-pilot for the next thirty-plus years, but the coming together of Han Solo with the chained, starved and angry 'beast' prisoner Chewbacca, on the swamp world of Mimban, was certainly unexpected, dramatic, fun and a well conceived/ executed idea for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Their soon leg-chained escape from the pit reminded me of a Star Wars version of that classic on-the-run drama The Defiant Ones, which starred Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. Though here it was clearly done in a much more humorous vein.
