CLASSIC INDY: NIGHT-TIME SCARES!
The jungle at night can be a weird and dangerous place, as out of place showgirl and musician Willie Scott soon discovers in a fun comedy sequence for Kate Capshaw and her fellow Indiana Jones stars, before the darkness of Mola Ram emerges, from 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

CLASSIC INDY: INDY vs MOLA!
It's the greatest fight for survival ever for our intrepid hero Indiana Jones as he takes on the remaining warriors of the horrific Thuggee Cult and their brutal, terrifying leader Mola Ram, possessed with devilish powers. It's action and excitement all the way high above the Pankot landscape, and across a rickety rope bridge, no less!
Another classic sequence from the under-appreciated Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

CLASSIC INDY: WHERE'S THE ANTIDOTE?
Chaos has erupted within the glamorous environs of the famous Club Obi Wan in Shanghai, as a poisoned Indiana Jones struggles to recover an antidote to his deadly condition from the domineering gangster entrepreneur Lao-Che and his sinister henchman, in this great movie card publicity for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, from 1984.

CLASSIC INDY: FILLING IN FOR HARRISON!
A clearly fatigued from long filming hours Kate Capshaw gets some support from director and eventual husband Steven Spielberg, as well as the young and enthused Ke Huy Quan, in this intriguing shot taken within the Thuggee cavern set at Elstree, as the actors film their scenes around a hospital recovering Harrison Ford for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
It's great to see Ke Huy Quan back in cinemas for the acclaimed new modern fantasy adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once, opposite the iconic Michelle Yeoh.

CLASSIC INDY: INDY THE LIBERATOR!
It's been a death-defying (literally!) adventure for Indiana Jones and his weary travelling companion Willie Scott, but the smiling faces of the liberated Indian slave children running towards their loving parents more than makes up for their past harrowing troubles, in this memorable finale to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

CLASSIC INDY: SNAKE WATCHER!

CLASSIC INDY: THE FLIGHT FROM CLUB OBI-WAN!
She's burnt two fingers and she's cracked a nail! No, cabaret entertainer and actress Willie Scott, always on the lookout for a great lifestyle, is not used to being threatened, shot at and carried along/hurled out a multi-storey building window, as her unique entrance into the mad, crazy, dangerous world of Indiana Jones begins, in this great image from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Though a controversial character with critics and feminists at the time of original release, especially in contrast to the previous film's strong-willed Marion Ravenwood, Willie Scott has become more appreciated over time, thanks to the witty repartee she/actress Kate Capshaw shared with Harrison Ford as Indy, in dialogue generated by the classic film loving, talented script writing husband/wife duo Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. Always enthusiastic and a great behind the scenes raconteur, AFICIONADO was sorry to hear of Miss Katz's passing back in 2018.

CLASSIC INDY: ROPE BRIDGE TERROR!
Willie Scott and Short Round are in the biggest fix yet by the conclusion of THE TEMPLE OF DOOM- the latter has tried to convince the former that the rope bridge they need to cross for escape is perfectly safe. Wrong!

CLASSIC INDY: WATERY ESCAPADES!
Back in 1983, I'm sure that Harrison Ford would gamely have gone down a water-propelled ravine, within a yellow life raft, in order to bring believability to his adventures as Indiana Jones. But a more practical and less dangerous way was ultimately achieved to handle his close-ups, as seen in this fun behind the scenes image from Temple of Doom.

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: INTO DARKNESS!
Rounding off 2014's landmark celebration of 30 classic and inspiring years of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is this lovely cover, by Jackson "Butch" Guice, to the film's compiled comic adaptation, as part of the Marvel Super Special series of 1984. I personally had never seen this particular art piece before, so I thought it was worthy of posting.

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: A DIAMOND THAT'S NOT A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND!
Eventual Mrs Spielberg Kate Capshaw rehearses the classic comedy moment where Willie tries to recover a unique diamond, only to lose it, firstly kicked around, then buried within a floored pile of ice, during the film's incident-packed opening sequence.

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: GONE FOR A RIDE!
He's used to planes, trains and automobiles. Now Harrison Ford undertakes an altogether more different, and literally back-breaking, form of transportation than he's normally used to, during Sri Lankan filming of TEMPLE OF DOOM in 1983.

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: FORTUNE AND GLORY, THE MARVEL WAY!
Following in the tradition of their innovative STAR WARS work, MARVEL's adaptations of the first two INDIANA JONES movies were equally exciting and enjoyable to read, containing minor differences and occasional deleted scenes in comparison to the theatrical versions, at a time in the comic industry when limited series were really starting to make an impact...

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: "I THINK WE'VE GOT A BIG PROBLEM!"
From Indy's Journal: It was all going so well, then I woke up and found that the pilots of the plane had abandoned us, we're flying on dry vapours and out of control above the alps, that the screaming nightclub singer's still screaming, and Shorty's trying to find our stuff!
I think we've got a big problem!

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: THE INDY ELEMENTS!
Another intriguing marketing piece for TEMPLE OF DOOM- the Japanese potpourri poster for the film's 1984 release, primarily focusing on the scary elements of the Thuggee cult's underground lair at the top, with Indy (whom they like to see without his famous hat!) and Willie underneath, and the classic finale rope bridge scene also included.

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: CREEPY-CRAWLY TIME!
Yep, she's screaming again!
Poor Willie- former Shanghai hostess, singer and mixer with the elite, in constant trouble once she's forced into following Indiana Jones out the window of Club Obi-Wan! And even worse, she's now covered in bugs!
A classic moment from INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM that, behind the scenes, understandably freaked out Kate Capshaw in real life, too.

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: LOCATION DISTRACTIONS...
On location in Sri Lanka, Steven Spielberg tries to get the attention of the always enthusiastic screen newcomer Key Huy Quan, during an off-duty moment from filming for INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.
If you're in the UK, keep an eye out for upcoming re-worked repeats of classic THE SOUTH BANK SHOW documentaries, especially from the seventies and eighties, which have just started on the SKY ARTS 1 HD channel. A 1984 edition interview with Steven Spielberg will be amongst the line-up, showing on Thursday 31st July, 2014 at 9.30pm. AFICIONADO will have a programme review nearer transmission...

'TEMPLE OF DOOM' AT 30: TWO MINDS, ONE OBJECTIVE...
In the 1983 heat of Sri Lanka, our "Man with the Hat" confers with director and friend Steven Spielberg - a superb creative partnership - on his upcoming duel with two Thugghee swordsmen, in this nice behind the scenes image from TEMPLE OF DOOM.

CLASSIC INDY: HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY, 'TEMPLE OF DOOM'!
![]() |
| Supreme celebration art by Mark Raats. |
From the Shanghai-based dangers of Lao Che inside his Club Obi-Wan, to the heart-stopping Pankot Palace rope bridge struggle against Mola Ram and his Thuggee Cult, Indiana Jones is certainly in for the prequel ride of his life, as his adventure inside the heart of darkness- The Temple of Doom- hits its Thirtieth Anniversary. The film continues to hold up well as one heck of a top-flight blockbuster, as only Lucas, Spielberg and Harrison Ford know how to realise it!
