'SOLO': THE CHARMING CRIMINAL!

He's paid off his debts to the Crimson Dawn crime cartel and since gone on to enjoy a high life of gambling, women and intergalactic wheeler-dealing. Now, when Crimson Dawn's high up the chain Qi'ra offers him a lucrative journey to the dangerous realms of the Spice Mines of Kessel, the challenge soon proves too irresistible to turn down, and leads to an intriguing first contact with another equally daring smuggler and rival adventurer, a certain Han Solo...

'SOLO': TO DEAL WITH A SCOUNDREL...

Still on Vandor, the eager to score success for themselves Han and Chewbacca (aka 'hairy and the boy'), with critical help from Qi'ra and Beckett, encounter the charismatic, talented, but still crooked entrepreneur Lando Calrissian, to whom a right-price deal must be struck quickly to acquire his services and fast ship for travel to Kessel. A fun scene from Solo: A Star Wars Story full of effective dialogue, humour and good character performance moments.

Behind the scenes on the partial reshooting of the sequence.

It's also a scene genuinely honouring (if transferred to a space fantasy environment) the kind of atmospheric, cold and frosty western township vibe seen in popular seventies genre films like the Warren Beatty cult classic McCabe and Mrs Miller, a primary creative example for Solo's Vandor-set tone by its original directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

'SOLO': INSIDE THE CALRISSIAN FALCON!

They say a home reflects its owner, and that's certainly true of suave smuggler Lando Calrissian's 'pleasure' vehicle that is the sleek Millennium Falcon, as seen in these great on set behind the scenes images from Solo: A Star Wars Story, at a time in the film before his beloved speedy craft is ultimately wrecked to hell by a certain young hothead named Han Solo!

'SOLO': THE 'CHRONICLES' CONTINUE...

They're off from the seedy environs of Vandor with the promise of new challenges, new adventures and new rewards - that great team of smooth-talking, smooth-piloting Lando Calrissian and the droid that (mostly) keeps him honest - L3 - in this great cockpit image of the duo piloting the Millennium Falcon, from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

'SOLO': WITH WEAPON OF CHOICE!

Lando Calrissian normally uses charm and perseverance as his primary weapons in negotiating success from the business table to the bedroom. But if you're in the wrong crowd, and if you especially damage his precious Millennium Falcon, then you'll truly see the wrong side of his skill-sets, namely via blaster, in this great image from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

'SOLO': THE FALCON GAMBLE - ROUND TWO!

It's re-match time between Han Solo and card shark sports legend Lando Calrissian at the tropical jungle landscape realms of Numidian Prime. And once again the Sabaac high stakes are for the top prize that is the Millennium Falcon. But will Lando's 'ace in the hole' trick once more come to his aid?

A great shot of Donald Glover as the smooth Lando Calrissian from Solo: A Star Wars Story, out now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.

'SOLO': A GALAXY OF ROGUES AND SCOUNDRELS!

The Jedi are gone and the Republic for whom they served has collapsed in on itself, through which an oppressive Empire has now been forged. This is a time of darkness, of scum and villainy. And a time when 'free enterprise' for rogues and misfits thrives between the far-out cracks of the universe. Welcome to the universe and main characters of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

'SOLO': THE FIRST 'I KNOW'!

They only just got out of Kessel alive, he's been shot, and his beloved, highly polished Millennium Falcon has almost become a flying scrap pile. Lando Calrissian hates Han Solo for all that's happened to him and his ship, and tells him so, then gets a now classic response from the Corellian prior best known and used to equally great effect in The Empire Strikes Back. An inspired little comedy moment from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Filming the scene on location in Spain.

'SOLO': FIGHTING TRIO!

His smooth-talking, tale-spinning work for the 'Calrissian Chronicles' disrupted, and his beloved ship taking blaster hits from the Pyke Clan's weaponry, Lando joins Han and Beckett for a piece of the action on Kessel, in this great moment from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

'SOLO': THAT SPACE-AGE MAN ABOUT TOWN LOOK!

Lando's not a system he's a man, Han Solo would later say of the eventual Baron Calrissian of Bespin to Princess Leia. Yet Lando certainly possesses an entire solar system of colourful, stylish and downright wacky clothes and capes in his wardrobe, as seen above in one of the great posed character images of Donald Glover's playing the icon role, from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Note the fun Ralph McQuarrie referencing on his shirt, to the unused Sicemon planet air taxi from Return of the Jedi.

'SOLO': INTO HYPERSPACE!

Back in 1977, American audiences attending the opening days for the original Star Wars in cinemas leapt out of their seats and applauded the screen when Han Solo took us and the Millennium Falcon in its first Hyperspace jump. Now, that same classic visual effect (the 'slit scan' technique, also used in 2001 and for the Classic Doctor Who TV series titles of the Tom Baker era) continues to enthrall fans young and old with its promise of exciting and memorable adventures to come, of which the new Solo: A Star Wars Story satisfyingly delivered those goods, what with both Han and Lando Calrissian gamely at the trusty ship's controls.

'SOLO': MEET THE SCOUNDRELS!

One set of advance Solo: A Star Wars Story character posters would face some fan controversy during the film's 2018 pre-release marketing campaign, due to the fact that our main band of scoundrels were not shown holding their blaster weapons, a cautious creative decision initiated by Disney, apparently in response to worries about the promotion of guns in family entertainment. Thankfully, this character poster set would go on to appear unaltered within international territories.

Above and below are the original versions of those posters as seen at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2018. It would seem that only the Beckett character was showcased in this campaign without a blaster.

'SOLO': THE LANDO FACTOR!

Self-made galactic man! Lando Calrissian.

'Everything you've heard about me... is true.'

He's cleared his debts (especially to the underworld), he's not tied down to any kind of personal/business commitments, and it looks like the galaxy is for his taking, just as is its female population is for the smooth romancin' (be they human or alien, or even droid!). Yes, hot pilot of his beloved Millennium Falcon, Captain Lando Calrissian, makes his special debut in Solo: A Star Wars Story, in an excellent performance from Donald Glover that showcases all the character traits the popular high-caliber scoundrel will have by the Classic Trilogy era, as originally personified by Billy Dee Williams, most notably the relaxed and confident ego and manner. But also, vitally, the fact that prior to the events of Cloud City, Lando wasn't always so reliable and trustworthy as you think...

The card shark!

The cool coat!

The slick pilot!

Blaster man!

'SOLO': THE AFICIONADO REVIEW!

NO SPOILERS!

With his fine filmmaking pedigree and a track record of crafting satisfying and diverse movies across all genres, alongside his prior friendship/historical ties to George Lucas, I had no fears that Ron Howard would deliver a solid and satisfying adventure in the STAR WARS universe. But Solo: A Star Wars Story is so much more than that- it's a genuine triumph and a job truly well done, extremely well done, by the director, his fine acting ensemble, and a superb behind the scenes group. Full of big-screen thrills, drama, danger, a swirl of romance, and BIG surprises and revelations, the film is a lovely counterpoint to the often grim events of 2017's The Last Jedi and 2016's Rogue One. Simply put, Solo is a lot of fun- a hyperspace jump full of it!

Woody Harrelson commented in a recent interview that he thought the Solo script was terrific, and it certainly is- the Kasdans deliver the storytelling goods: fast moving, full of great characters and incident, with a fine grasp on their favourite character of Han Solo and the genesis of his relationships with Chewbacca and Lando. Such exemplary material proves a great blueprint, but its enhanced through Howard's assured and confident camera lens, and via an equally stellar cast, all uniformly excellent throughout, of which up and coming Alden Ehrenreich is a fine prequel successor to Harrison Ford. Ford IS, and always will be, Han Solo, as producer Gary Kurtz once remarked in the seventies, but Ehrenreich captures the same likeable, reckless, endearing, mad and spirited qualities of the character, alongside more of a wounded soul with sorrowful eyes at the start of Solo's original journey from the absolute depths of the now legendary industrial world of Corellia. Donald Glover is a scene-stealer as the smooth yet gutsy Lando, in ways in which Billy Dee Williams will be proud, whilst Joonas Suotamo as Chewie is perfect, clearly working hard to make sure his interpretation of the Wookiee matches what Peter Mayhew once did- it still rankles AFICIONADO that Joonas's name was not properly given a credit on the singular movie character poster.

As expected, the effects and sound design are first rate, with John Powell's music fusing well with John Williams classic material and his new theme for Han. Plus so many great moments for Classic and Prequel fans to enjoy and spot in the movie- I loved the further referencing back to the classic Marvel comic books and Expanded Universe, now given official filmic reality. Above all else, Solo surely captures the beloved STAR WARS feel that the general public will appreciate, and especially die-hard fans who were more than a little upset by the developments of The Last Jedi. A sequel to Solo, continuing to link the pieces in towards A New Hope, would be great to have- let's hope this new anthology film's fun and warmth of heart tome finds its audience at the box office, and that Ron Howard continues his input with the franchise and the Millennium Falcon's crew somewhere, somehow.

Go see it!

AFICIONADO RATING: 4.5 out of 5

With thanks to Disney UK for the advance screening ticket.
