WHEN SITH'S COLLIDE! THE 'SHADOW LORD' MEETS HIS MATCH!

He's back, and badder than ever in Maul - Shadow Lord's gripping opening season finale.

It was the showdown worldwide Star Wars fans always wanted to see made a reality away from prior comic interpretations, as a non-speaking Darth Vader, a Sith Lord with slaying on his mind, menacingly took on the renegade Darth Maul, now out to build a new criminal enterprise for himself across the galaxy, and his reluctant fugitive comrades (including two runaway Jedi), all of them trapped within the jungle outskirts of the planet Janix, a world to which there now looked like no escape from. The confrontation/unleashing of Vader, returned to welcome animation form, was a big surprise and it proved a stunning action sequence to watch, certainly earning its place in the Saga's pantheon of classic scenes. It was a fine and exciting finale to Maul - Shadow Lord (one clearly acting as a tribute to a similar, if smaller in number, duel partaken by Vader against Luke and Leia on Mimban during the climax to 1978's Splinter of the Mind's Eye novel - the first Expanded Universe tale), whose opening season I thought started off quite dull, littered with mostly uninteresting supporting characters (who could have been in any bland police procedural drama ) and a thin overall story arc. Thankfully, as ever, Vader knows how to save the day and the streaming ratings!

I'm sure the majority of fans will completely disagree with my assessment of the show as it so far stands. Nonetheless, as we all await the eventual second season, I hope it will ultimately prove more inventive in further showcasing one of the Prequel saga's greatest villains beyond the small-time criminality prior watched, and more of his fight against his once Sith Master whilst his own so far struggling empire builds further. Will there possibly be a Vader re-match?

THE CLONE WARS: MASTER OF MALEVOLENCE!

The venomous red lightsaber-wielding former Sith Lord, Darth Maul, seems to have the luck of the Devil. Even being cut in half and sent down a seemingly bottomless pit by venerable young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the early stages of his assassin's career has failed to stop his bloodlust and need for revenge against the Jedi, his former master, and the galaxy itself.

Whether you were a fan of Maul's resurrection in The Clone Wars animated series or not, he's here to stay for the foreseeable future in the Star Wars universe, both onscreen (a reappearance in one of the many upcoming live-action Disney mini-series is most likely) and in the authorised Expanded Universe...

COUNT DOOKU - A LEGACY OF EVIL!

There's nothing more terrifying and dramatic in the Star Wars universe than a force for good turned bad. Darth Vader remains the ultimate example of the brightest angel turned darkest demon, but in the complex Prequel universe we also have the nefarious and deadly Count Dooku as a character lead-in of sorts, a once noble and respected figure who supposedly left the Jedi Order because of his disillusionment with its members and their decision-making across the galaxy, and whom soon went on to become the second on screen acolyte to the evil Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, acting under the radar in his new alternate guise as the manipulative and spiteful Darth Tyranus, before ultimately being pawn sacrificed for the greater evil by his 'Master' in the evolving great game of revenge and controlling of both the galaxy and its Republic, and in winning the trust and confidence of an even greater potential dark side force in the young and easily influenced Anakin Skywalker.

Cavan Scott's acclaimed script for his popular audio drama Dooku - Jedi Lost, examining the popular baddie's ultimate path to evil, has now become available in UK paperback from Arrow/Del Rey.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'DOOKU - JEDI LOST'

Dark fates await Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress in the all-new Dooku - Jedi Lost. Cover art by Aaron McBride.

Though Anakin Skywalker's journey into darkness is the lynchpin to the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, there were other Jedi from his era who'd also fall from grace and show great evil. Most notably, the nefarious, enigmatic and ruthlessly cruel figure of Count Dooku, as played in Episode's II and III by the stately presence with that classy veneer of evil that was silver-screen legend, Sir Christopher Lee. Now, in celebration of both the character and the man who played him, British author Cavan Scott gives us more on the origins of Dooku, born to nobility, becoming a once powerful Jedi, then a threat to the universe upon transferring his allegiances to the Sith, as Dooku - Jedi Lost's audio drama script gets a satisfying book release, available in the UK from Century Publishing.

Ever the imaginative storyteller, Scott uses Asajj Ventress, Dooku's own powerful Padawan for evil, as his key and unique framing device in launching the story, to peel back the dark layers of Dooku's past, his locked-away vulnerabilities, and soon future, whilst more facets of Ventress's own past, discovered and used by Dooku for twisted ends, are concurrently revealed.

Christopher Lee as the battle-scarred Count Dooku.

Removed from his linage of dynastic power on the Outer Rim world of Serenno by a Jedi seeker, an act of deliberate abandonment engineered by his powerful Father - a cruel leader despising of the Jedi (including his own son) and the Republic to whom they serve, Dooku's power is soon cultivated at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. But despite that potential goodness and the genuinely faithful service given to his Masters, as well as the benevolence and experience he gives as a role model teacher himself in his later years, Dooku's ego/arrogance, fused with driven ambition and greed to be the ultimate Jedi, alongside growing dark knowledge of secret Sith artefacts and prophecies at the Jedi Temple, assuredly launches his eventual steps towards the realms of darkness - true pride before a fall, bolstered by his frustration at his friends building inability to bring true peace and justice to the galaxy, of which even his closest confidants and later Padawan learners are not enough to keep him close to the side of light.

Dark times ahead for Dooku and Sifo-Dyas.

And Dooku's tragic family history already has ties to the Sith- the world of Serenno having been one of the sect's many empiric worlds from a thousand year before, whose now wary people are on the verge of rebellion against the Republic, egged on by his despot father. In Dooku - Jedi Lost, all these elements are well explored and used, as is the development of Dooku's problematic family ties (a weakness for his beloved sister being an important plot point) on a world he knows faces fiery oblivion, and which must be saved and shaped anew under his guidance, leading carefully to his eventual reign as Separatist Leader by the time of EPISODE II. In those final years before becoming one of 'The Lost Twenty', Dooku will further manipulate an old Jedi friend- the vulnerable Master Sifo-Dyas, a visionary on the brink of madness, who sees the dark future of the galaxy with building emotional intensity...

The many faces of Dooku. Art by Aaron McBride.

As the story reaches its darkest moments, Dooku- Jedi Lost proves a solid concoction from Cavan Scott that Prequel fans will enjoy. Most of the author's work in developing the Count feels right in the reading - a rare privilege to be able to bring so much more detail to such a popular Star Wars villain, including research that cleverly combines opinions and thoughts observed about the character from the late Mister Lee himself. Though I did have a problem in picturing Dooku as a pet person, as discovered here in moments that felt too Harry Potter-esque for my personal tastes, and not even during his prior positive status as a Jedi. (The choice of pet, however, soon proves key to the dark phoenix rising-esque idea perpetuated by the author.)

AFICIONADO RATING: Sith happens! From these interesting script/book foundations, there's lots of potential for a sequel drama showing Dooku properly assuming the mantle of Darth Tyranus alongside Darth Sidious, so let's hope that happens... 3.5 out of 5

THE 'PHANTOM' AT TWENTY: MAKING AN ENTRANCE!

The hangar bay battle has been victorious for our heroes but their direct path to the throne room is now blocked by the entrance of that dark assassin prior encountered by Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine. And a formidable enemy he will further prove, as the Jedi soon ready for battle against the de-cloaked Sith Lord.

"Once I was in it (the make-up), it wouldn't bother me that much, except maybe at lunchtime when I'd try to catch some sleep. With the horns you couldn't lay down without ruining the couch or the bed. It would take about two hours to get into, about 45 minutes just getting it all off. Could've been longer, but I'd sometimes go home with some of it still on."

THE MAN WHO BECAME TYRANUS! 'DOOKU: JEDI LOST' - OUT NOW IN SCRIPT BOOK

Powers of darkness reign in Dooku: Jedi Lost.

In a long period of tumultuous galactic history, he was many things to many people- an esteemed member of a family dynasty of importance and influence on his home world of Serenno; a widely respected and knowledge-experienced Jedi Knight by both his elders and peers in the Old Republic, and years later a seemingly dedicated and inspiring leader of rebellion and change for the breakaway Confederacy of Independent Systems. But above all else, Count Dooku was born to become evil. Fascinated by evil and what it could accomplish, his was an evil fused with the kind of harnessed power few could ever achieve to such great heights. In those successful aims Dooku soon attracted attention from a hidden part of the galaxy, becoming Darth Tyranus, the second acolyte to the shadowy magnificence of his Sith leader, Darth Sidious, capably emerged from a long self-exile and unleashed to corrupt, control and have the galaxy shaped to their own destinies - their own image of control. But power always breeds superior ambition, especially when you're a Sith...

Now, discover the many complex facets and potential backstory of the superb Prequel Trilogy villain brilliantly played with such damaged panache and hidden veneer by the legendary icon Sir Christopher Lee, in Expanded Universe writer/fan favourite Cavan Scott's assured character epic Dooku: Jedi Lost, now a script transcript book based on his acclaimed audio drama of past and future intrigue, and a tale of how power distorts and corrupts a life. It's out now in UK hardback from Century.

The erudite but vicious master of the Dark Side: Count Dooku.

Here's the details:

Delve into the history of the sinister Count Dooku in the original script to the thrilling Star Wars audio production!

Darth Tyranus. Count of Serenno. Leader of the Separatists. A red saber, unsheathed in the dark. But who was he before he became the right hand of the Sith? As Dooku courts a new apprentice, the hidden truth of the Sith Lord's past begins to come to light.
Dooku's life began as one of privilege--born within the stony walls of his family's estate, orbited by the Funeral Moon where the bones of his ancestors lie interred. But soon, his Jedi abilities are recognized, and he is taken from his home to be trained in the ways of the Force by the legendary Master Yoda.
As he hones his power, Dooku rises through the ranks, befriending fellow Jedi Sifo-Dyas and taking a Padawan of his own, the promising Qui-Gon Jinn--and tries to forget the life that he once led. But he finds himself drawn by a strange fascination with the Jedi Master Lene Kostana, and the mission she undertakes for the Order: finding and studying ancient relics of the Sith, in preparation for the eventual return of the deadliest enemies the Jedi have ever faced.
Caught between the world of the Jedi, the ancient responsibilities of his lost home, and the alluring power of the relics, Dooku struggles to stay in the light--even as the darkness begins to fall.

CLASSIC IMAGE: TESTING BLADES, TESTING SKILLS...

In the Death Star corridor linked to the hangar bay housing the captured Millennium Falcon, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi continues to lock lightsabers with his ominous former pupil Darth Vader, whose strength over him in the Dark Side of the Force adds pressure to their duel. A great photo angle, presumably taken by the on-set lens man John Jay.

STAR WARS AFICIONADO has always, always loved the first lightsaber duel of the original Star Wars, and certainly commends Frazer Diamond, son of the film's famous and much-respected British stunt coordinator/duel choreographer Peter Diamond, on a recent comment/opinion to those fans that have unfairly criticized the classic sequence over the years, as shown below.

CLASSIC IMAGE: A JOB WELL DONE...

Inside his solar sail vehicle departing Geonosis, a confident Count Dooku (aka Darth Tyranus) is satisfied with the handiwork he has just initiated: wounding the two esteemed Jedi in Obi-Wan Kenobi and young Anakin Skywalker, bringing trouble to and dark side power against his former master in Yoda, and at last launching the galaxy-spanning Clone Wars that will fracture the lives of billions, in a well captured frame from EPISODE II.

THE 'SITH' AT 10: A (DARK) STAR IS (RE)BORN!

Twenty-two years on from his last on-screen appearance, the fearsome Sith Lord who'd made such an indelible impression on the world's STAR WARS fans, and become a unique part of the science fiction/fantasy genre as one of its finest and truest faces of evil iconography: the chillingly emaciated, breathing suit wearing form of Darth Vader, would finally return, if all too briefly, during the closing scenes of EPISODE III, becoming one of that film's key worldwide selling points in linking the Prequel and Classic Trilogies together.

Now, in 2015, the ominous figure of death, carnage and power emerges anew as figurehead to an all-new and eagerly awaited mini-series, officially canon (well, until LUCASFILM changes their minds again!) from MARVEL COMICS, and set during the Classic Trilogy. The acclaimed first issue's out right now and will surely sell the kind of gold dust amounts that will impress DISNEY no end...

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'MAUL - LOCKDOWN' (NOVEL)

STAR WARS: MAUL – LOCKDOWN

By Joe Schreiber

Published in hardback by CENTURY PUBLISHING

Reviewed by Scott Weller

Joe Schreiber pulls us back to his darker interpreting of the STAR WARS universe, utilizing the Prequel saga’s most formidable Sith apprentice- the anti-hero hero we all love to root for- Darth Maul, in his biggest and boldest book adventure yet, sending the horny little devil into the firing line, infiltrating a disturbing and deadly prison base- Cog Hive Seven, under orders from his Sith masters, to locate a powerful and secretive arms dealer residing there, but the price in finding him is having to participate in the prison satellite’s main form of “entertainment”: the ultimate form of bloodsport, watched and wagered on by gambling spectators from all corners of the galaxy. Physically primed he may be, but could even Maul be out of his depth in this dangerous environment?

The red and black icon was the perfect killing machine in THE PHANTOM MENACE, but here, undercover as a freelance mercenary, he gets to use his brains alongside his brawn, especially as he is not allowed to use his Force powers or have his trustily efficient double bladed lightsaber in case his Sith identity be revealed. This time, in this seemingly escape proof prison, he truly has to adapt to survive, turning the tide to his favour where possible in a series of events that prove challenging and page turning for the reader. Maul soon manipulates through strength and power, prime requisites of being a member of the Sith, putting himself in a unique position to find a Iram Radique, the key to bringing further chaos to the Galactic Republic and help the Sith’s takeover plans blossom further.

Using all kinds of prison drama scenarios and characters we’re used to in film and television (shades of PRISON BREAK and 24 are thrown in to the mix, alongside a little bit of that ingenious nineties indie sci-fi film CUBE) but with far darker shadings and twists, overall adding a new kind of barbarity within the STAR WARS fiction envelope that we haven’t seen before. Schreiber makes sure that Maul is aided and hindered by a genuine diverse variety of scum and villainy, as well as the luckless and the unfortunate who have ended up locked away alongside him in the farthest reaches of space.

Characters whose destinies will change upon meeting Maul, mostly for the worse, include an ambitious prison boss whose control of the enclave and its many depraved inmates has so far proved successful, alongside her profit-inducing run of bloodsports. Sadiki Blirr thinks she has it all under control, but is actually sitting on a powder keg waiting to explode- thanks to Maul, who soon begins a prison break out and lights the fuse for a final escalating gang war. Alongside her is her technical wizard brother, constantly analyzing the prisoners and their abilities for the continuing sport, and now fascinated by the charismatic, horned Zabrakian that has newly arrived in their domain.

A secrets hiding, burnt out pit fighter and his son launch the rest of the colourful and crude band, including a slimy Banking Clan official with ties to Maul’s masters, shady and corrupt jailers, untrustworthy financiers, a dangerous religious cult and several bizarre creatures residing inside the dark and restrictive areas of the prion facility, all with a taste for blood, including one nice surprise from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK that fans will raise a smile to. It’s all quite the party!

But the most important new character in the book is Radique- a genuine challenge for Maul, his identity mostly unknown to the inmates and fully immersed within the prison community, even having a small legion of eyes gouged out servants to follow his orders, and clawbirds to guide them and pass on messages whilst proving useful attack beasts.

Radique is a shadowy figure that might not even exist yet runs the joint through quiet terror and whispered dread- he could easily give THE USUAL SUSPECTS Keyser Soze a run for his money as the author builds up Maul’s search for his elusive prey, soon on a timer to complete his mission before his own life is extinguished amidst some fast paced destructive chaos.

Never afraid to use some of the film series classic characters, either, Schreiber gives us a worthy cameo from vile gangster Jabba the Hutt- still slobbering over humanoid females and an interested party in the gambling affairs and profits of the facility. Not good news… He/it helps bring the book to a highly charged conclusion…

Meanwhile, back on that shining jewel of power that is Coruscant, the always fascinating, constantly scheming rivalry between Sith Lords Darth’s Sidious and his supposed mentor Darth Plagueis goes up a notch: the ultimate chess game for control of the universe-move and counter move. Enemies yet brothers in evil.

A further intriguing link to the authors STAR WARS past (and future) comes with an appearance from a certain Imperial prison ship not yet overridden by zombie hordes…

For the most part, Schreiber’s character interactions come together well- the only weak link being the arrival of a female Jedi outcast in charge of a legion of her own religious warriors, which, ultimately, proves a little dull. As does the tense attraction she and Maul share towards the books conclusion. It all feels a little bit too familiar and overdone in STAR WARS.

Another plus for the book: the interior of Cog Hive Seven is handled effectively: a grimy, metal barred, windowless world specially designed by its jailers to disorientate its inmates living above, between and below- all of them injected with small explosive detonators if they fail to obey the laws and curfew times, and primed for the savagery of combat that lies ahead…

You can imagine the blood, sweat, violence and claustrophobia in Shreiber’s descriptive passages-a perfect fit plot-vehicle wise for a Sith warrior of such intensity, and darkness, to be immersed in. Fan controversially, this is, perhaps, Schreiber’s most bloodthirsty action and violence tale. Not for the squeamish with its descriptions of ingeniously contrived deaths, mutilations and combat, MAUL: LOCKDOWN is a far more adult and brutal, less family friendly STAR WARS adventure than most people are used to, with much larger ambitions in comparison to his two previously well received, relatively smaller scale horror journeys with Death Troopers and Red Harvest.

AFICIONADO RATING: Prequel fan favourite Maul is effectively showcased here, though some of the violence and graphic descriptions may not be to everyone's tastes. 7.5 out of 10.

CLASSIC BLOG: HAPPY TENTH BIRTHDAY, EPISODE ONE!

STAR WARS: CELEBRATION fan art adaptation by Adriano Ticiano.

From May 19th 2009, and another "day long remembered..."

By Scott Weller

Yep, it's the premiere epic milestone for the first film of the Prequel Trilogy.

Today was the day millions of STAR WARS fans dreams were realized. After so long in absence from our cinema screens, a new film, and a new and bold launcher for the Prequel universe, was finally released- nay, unleashed- to the world, and fan excitement and enthusiasm would surely never reach such tall volcanic peaks ever again. Ten years on, peoples opinions on THE PHANTOM MENACE seem to be as divided as ever, but, on this special day, lets celebrate everything that was sooo good about this movie-the scenes we all dreamed about witnessing finally in living breathing richness (the Jedi/Darth Maul duel, the epic ground and space battles that were to come across not only in this adventure but the next two following, and the first steps in the takeover of the galaxy by the Sith Lord to be named Darth Sidious), the evocative new locales (Naboo, Coruscant-the later Imperial homeland- finally witnessed in all its living, breathing spectacle!), amazing, all defining and ground breaking special effects (the pod race is still superb after all these years, and Jar Jar Binks-well, whatever you think of him, he was still the effects revolution that came before Gollum!), the intriguing new characters added to the universe (Padme Amidala-the “Queen” and mother of the Skywalker children, no more shrouded in enigmatic mystery-and now a major player in the new STAR WARS universe, Darth Maul-badass Sith Lord who, to this day, is still unequalled in nastiness by his many legions of beloved fans, the emergence of Senator Palpatine-played with a relish to admire by Ian McDiarmid, Qui-Gon Jinn-the doomed and noble Jedi brought to life with such warmth and bedrock strength by Liam Neeson, and, of course, the brave, loyal, adventurous but ultimately afraid Anakin Skywalker as personified by perky Jake Lloyd and, later, to doom laden tragedy by Hayden Christensen). Finally, there's the Lucas masterplan - to show what happens when a universe becomes too big and too corrupt to sustain itself as a Republic for good-ultimately manipulated and devouring itself into an Empire of fear and control, and what happens when an innocent, loving child turned hero to the people, with no prior sense of greed, ultimately falls prey to the dark.

Brave storytelling, and an epic new saga for a new epic time…

A fun, lively story that fans of all ages could sit together and enjoy, alongside the subtle foreshadowing of doom and menace to come, and against a STAR WARS universe that seemed even bigger than we'd ever seen before. But then, we should have expected all that, shouldn’t we! That’s the unique beauty, wonder and excitement of the STAR WARS SAGA, and one of the reasons why it will continue to endure into the next generation of fans, and the next, and the next…

Thank you, George Lucas, for re-igniting the creative fire we almost thought would never come back, and for once more catching all that magic in a bottle just for us!!
