It's amazing how much concept commissioned movie poster work for a Star Wars film is commissioned and rejected, and all by such great talents. This is a fun all-action reworking of the original Hildebrandt Star Wars poster of 1975 for Return of the Jedi, with the iconic John Alvin adding Han Solo to the original but more seasoned Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia pairing amidst a Death Star backdrop. And all three atop the gross Jabba the Hutt, no less!

AN 'EMPIRE' AT 45: A UNIVERSE OF DRAMA AND ADVENTURE...
The long-running commercial artist John Alvin's work on the original Star Wars films have become highly beloved and respected over time. None more so than the super 1995 work he did for the films on their uncut VHS release before the debut of the Special Editions, of which all the key successful character ingredients for The Empire Strikes Back would be well represented.

CLASSIC ART: SYMBIOTIC JEDI!
The unique bond between Master and Apprentice Jedi in the Force has never been better exemplified nor more conflicted on screen than the one between the charismatic veteran Qui-Gon Jinn and his dutiful student in the raw, Obi-Wan Kenobi, during the exciting and tragic events of EPISODE I.
The duo are well rendered here by the ever-popular, and much-missed artist and talent, John Alvin.

CLASSIC ART: PEOPLES AND PLACES
Making more of an indelible mark in film history with every passing year, soon coming up to the 20th Anniversary of filming of EPISODE I in 1997, the characters of George Lucas's Prequel Trilogy are starting to get some well deserved respect and even some re-evaluation in certain quarters. So its apt, then, to celebrate this with a selection of great art from the late talent John Alvin, which also fuses-in some of the beloved Classic Trilogy stars.

CLASSIC ART: POD RACER THRILLS!
John Alvin's adrenaline French STAR WARS FAN CLUB art for the equally on-screen adrenaline pod race from EPISODE I- still one of the all-time great sequences handled by ILM ever to be seen in a blockbuster movie. Looking forward to seeing what the company and J.J. Abrams will be doing to try and top such premiere league STAR WARS action/adventure sequences with EPISODE VII onwards...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, 'STAR WARS'!
The late John Alvin's three lovely pieces for the mid-nineties STAR WARS VHS releases prove an excellent way to celebrate the STAR WARS saga's birthday today. As a new direction for the franchise looms from the considerable pairing of JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy, lets not forget the original, incredible epic work created by George Lucas that remains cinema's greatest fantasy creation.

Mike Ryan at THE HUFFINGTON POST recently did an interesting feature about the directors of STAR WARS, their unique differences, and what J.J. Abrams will be bringing to the table in the future. AFICIONADO BLOG 1,000: THERE AND BACK AGAIN...

| The STAR WARS saga continues... |
A picture tells a thousand words, and the late John Alvin's lovely and evocative art celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Classic STAR WARS Trilogy in 2007 is now more pertinent and relevant than ever, as it looks like the Skywalker family will be returning in one way, shape or form for the upcoming EPISODE VII. Looking to the stars for adventure and excitement has never been more romantic and compelling if you're a STAR WARS fan, of which the time until 2015 will surely fly by...
This wonderful image also makes a fine turning point representation for the STAR WARS AFICIONADO blog site, too, as it reaches its truly landmark 1,000th article. In just a little bit over two years since it started off as a companion to our main site, it's come a long way, and has more than proved an accomplishment worth celebrating prior to next year's Tenth Anniversary...

FLASHBACK: CELEBRATING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF "STAR WARS"
![]() |
| John Alvin's spirited poster leads the Tenth Anniversary celebration charge for STAR WARS. |
With the apparently imminent news from REED of their CELEBRATION VI convention, presumably planned for 2012 (the Thirty Fifth anniversary of the original STAR WARS, the Tenth for EPISODE II and the Fifth of THE CLONE WARS), there will soon be lots for fans to celebrate and for costume fans to get into their best Stormtrooper and Jedi outfits for!
Until then, however, I thought it might be nice to go back in time and do a mini flashback to 1987 and the very first major anniversary event of any kind linked to STAR WARS: the Tenth Anniversary. The period of STAR WARS inactivity between the end of RETURN OF THE JEDI in 1983 and the re-invigorated interest in the saga with Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy books in 1991 may have been a long one, but this bright spark of joy was the first signpost for a great many ambitious things to come.
As well as interview footage from the time, enclosed are some nice images and info on merchandise and events linked to that great and memorable year which was well celebrated by STAR WARS fans in the US.

Surely the highlight of the year had to be the massive STARLOG magazine organised convention-A Tenth Anniversary Tribute to STAR WARS and George Lucas- which took place in Los Angeles during the weekend of 24th May 1987, and saw participation not only from many of the films luminary behind the scenes talent and cast, but also had a very rare appearance from Lucas himself, who talked at length to the 9,000 plus fans crammed into the auditorium about the saga-past, present and future- and answered questions from the audience. Darth Vader returned, voiced by James Earl Jones, and he would also prior introduce Lucas's appearance on stage (check out this brilliant clip: YouTube - REAL Darth Vader Standup Intro To George Lucas).
The much missed UK magazine STARBURST magazine had several reporters covering this historic and much beloved event. Check out this PDF for more information:STAR WARS 10TH ANNIV
If anyone out there has any further specific memories of the event, or has additional pics/info, please share them with us. And, beyond the US, if anyone else celebrated the Tenth Anniversary in their own countries please get in touch and tell us about it -we'd love to hear from you...

CLASSIC ART: A LEGEND RETURNS...
I love this super artwork by the late, great John Alvin that was used for in-store/magazine promotions in America and Australia for the unaltered Classic Trilogy's "one last time" final release on VHS tape circa 1995 (Alvin did the VHS tape sleeve art for the individual films that year, too), before the onslaught of the love 'em or hate 'em SPECIAL EDITIONS in 1997. If anyone has this image in better res quality, please send it through so I can re-post.
I wish LUCASFILM would release this terrific image as an official poster. It'd make a great Blu-ray sleeve cover for EPISODE IV!
