CELEBRATING TWENTY YEARS OF THE ORIGINAL 'THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION'
In my book the best collection of the three original unaltered films (the last time they'd be available to purchase in that state until the DVD "special features" of 2006), behind the scenes materials and other physically produced items, the UK's 1995 Definitive Collection VHS set from Lucasfilm/FOX, then available in a special black Imperial S- Executor tin, remains one of the quintessential, and most nostalgic, pieces of STAR WARS merchandise one could ever collect. And, though it had lots of deleted scenes which were not available back in the nineties, not even the first Blu-ray set of 2011 has managed to equal it in incorporating all of this package's original documentaries and rare trailers, alongside a wealth of solid length behind the scenes featurettes, ILM videomatics and stills galleries, into one set. The UK VHS release even boasts extra audio/visual materials than what would be available on the better picture and sound quality US laserdisc boxset (which regrettably became more notable for fans in suffering from some minor scene cutting on one of the changeovers on EMPIRE's movie discs than for the extras it ultimately held!).
I fondly remember this limited edition tin flying like hotcakes off the video stores of HMV and VIRGIN on original release. I actually ended up getting mine, if a little dented in the right corner, via sci-fi memorabilia collector/dealer Bruce Campbell- his last sale copy!

With rumours abounding that the unaltered Classic Trilogy will finally be available in pristine transfers in time for next Christmas on Blu-ray, let's hope that a bigger, better accompanying special features set comes along to outdistance all that has gone before...

CLASSIC ART: AWAITING A VHS 'EMPIRE'!
Here's a fun rarity on Ebay I'd never seen before. A FOX US reservation order form/brochure for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK when its eventually made its way onto VHS in 1984, featuring a mixture of Tom Jung's classic poster art for the movie and, on the inside, for the original STAR WARS.

ROTJ AT 30: THE (VHS) RACE IS ON!
The spectacle of RETURN OF THE JEDI makes a
truncated conversion to home entertainment in 1985/1986. In the pre-digital
days when VHS tapes were all we had, STAR WARS found a new lease of life for
generations of fans on TV- in rental, then nice price release sales- until the
big-screen return of the Original Trilogy in love 'em or hate 'em SPECIAL
EDITIONS in 1997.

CLASSIC ART: LEGENDS OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS...
The iconic and moody clash of swords between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK would soon become the classic dramatic lynchpin iconography of the entire Classic Trilogy-the duel between good and evil, between father and son, as recognised in this very cool poster campaign art (with Luke's lightsaber given a green coloured JEDI makeover) for the SPECIAL EDITION releases on VHS and laserdisc back in the late nineties.

STAR WARS AT 35: TAPED HISTORY...
One of the first and best documentaries ever chronicling the behind the scenes making of George Lucas's original STAR WARS movie, and hosted by Anthony Daniels as Threepio no less (with the remote controlled three-legged Artoo Detoo), first shown on US television in 1977 and a sure fire hit on its original VHS debut in the birth of the rental/sale commercial tape market. I remember loving the programme so much, which also received a prior UK premiere screening on the UK's LWT channel back in the day, so much that my dad actually bought me the quite costly tape as a present circa 1979. The version pictured above is a later US version/release of the tape, which I don't recall ever seeing, with a preview for the then upcoming THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

CLASSIC ART: A LEGEND RETURNS...
I love this super artwork by the late, great John Alvin that was used for in-store/magazine promotions in America and Australia for the unaltered Classic Trilogy's "one last time" final release on VHS tape circa 1995 (Alvin did the VHS tape sleeve art for the individual films that year, too), before the onslaught of the love 'em or hate 'em SPECIAL EDITIONS in 1997. If anyone has this image in better res quality, please send it through so I can re-post.
I wish LUCASFILM would release this terrific image as an official poster. It'd make a great Blu-ray sleeve cover for EPISODE IV!
