ROGUE ONE: HEROES OF THE SKY!

Arriving in the nick of time and only just before the Empire's planetary shield is activated, Blue Leader and his X-wing squadron bring much needed airborne assistance to our small band of Rebel heroes on Scarif, taking out the light-weight but weapons powerful ground cargo Walkers, in this soaring visual moment from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

'STAR WARS' AT 40: "HERE THEY COME!"

The Death Star surface has been pestered by X-wing fighters, and now the Empire's TIE fighters have joined the conflict, fast engaging the Rebel forces and delivering crippling losses to them, starting off with John D (as in 'Doe', as known behind the scenes), played by Jack Klaff, the first onscreen victim to the TIEs' speed and firepower.

Originally it was written and shot with John D shooting down a TIE fighter before being destroyed by another of the enemy craft fast on his tail, but in the end it was decided during editing that it would have more impact if the TIEs were seen being fast and lethal from the offset.

'STAR WARS' AT 40: 'ANGRY MOSQUITOS'!

The small but determined force of Rebel X-wings close-in on the goliath that is the Death Star space station in this superb art by Howard Chaykin for the original STAR WARS Marvel comic series adaptation (issue 6). The X-wings are still referred to as Blue Squadron, with the change to Red happening whilst the comic adaptation was presumably already too far gone into production to make corrections.

Unlike the film version's fifteen minutes, the Death Star firing range point in the comics was thirty.

ROGUE ONE: BLUE'S IN BATTLE!

The brave X-wing fighter pilots of Blue Squadron continue their skills-hardened battle against Imperial craft large and small above Scarif, in this terrific shot from one of the recent ROGUE ONE trailers.

Its nice to see the reference to Blue Squadron, who were originally that designation for the original STAR WARS X-wings attacking the Death Star, before they changed to Red Squadron, due to blue screen bleeding/optical compositing concerns by ILM with the colour on the fighter's wings and siding, hence the paint scheme alteration. Some pilots at the Shepperton Studios live-action Yavin IV filming have helmets with blue Rebel insignia. By the later cockpit filming at Elstree, however, some of the blue insignias were painted red- you can see the quick painting-over clearly on the Blu-ray version of the film. Only in the medium of the Marvel comic adaptation and Alan Dean Foster's late 1976 book, did Red Squadron stay as Blue Squadron.
