AN 'EMPIRE' AT 45: BOUNTY HUNTER ASSEMBLY!
On the command deck of his Super Star Destroyer, much to the irritant of the Imperial Officers under his command, Darth Vader has put the call out to the deadliest group of Bounty Hunters in the galaxy to search for the Millennium Falcon and its occupants. Amongst them, and at the very top of the tree in his chosen specialist field of 'business', the totally lethal and resourceful Boba Fett, soon to be a legend of the Star Wars universe.

CLASSIC IMAGE: WHEN HUNTERS GATHER...
Two of the rarer explored alien bounty hunters of the live-action Star Wars Original Trilogy, though they have thrived in comics and book adventures over the years, the insect head-like droid 4-Lom (Chris Parsons) and the more humanoid Zuckuss (Kathy Munro aka Catherine Munroe) assemble with the rival likes of Boba Fett and IG-88 on the Star Destroyer Executor's bridge, awaiting instructions from their new potential pay master in the notorious Darth Vader, a fearsome individual not afraid to use the scum of the universe for his own means.
The Empire Strikes Back not just got a whole lot nastier and darker with this scene, but also opened up a much wider universe full of shady evil beyond the Emperor's dominion...

AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: VADER'S 'EXTRA HELP'!

The word has been put out by Darth Vader, alongside a substantial reward offered by the Empire, to the galaxy's greatest and most formidable bounty hunters to search for the Millennium Falcon and capture its passengers wherever they may be hiding. The roll call of nasties being the humanoid Dengar (played by British stand-in/wrestler Moray Bush), the droids IG-88 (a prop operated by Bill Hargreaves) and 4-Lom (Chris Parsons, once again inside a droid costume), insectoid Zuckuss (petite actress Cathy Munroe), reptilian Bossk (actor/stand-in Alan Harris), and the most well known and lethal of the assembled cadre, the esteemed and ultra-reliable Boba Fett (as played by Jeremy Bulloch).
Filmed in April, 1979, of which the bounty hunters wore costumes cheaply culled and revised from existing stock, with additional masks created by Stuart Freeborn and his team for 4-Lom and Zuckuss (the latter originally called 'Tuckuss' at one point), the sequence has since become a legendary and beloved moment for fans, who, even back with the film's original 1980 release, were intrigued to learn more about this gruesome collection of characters.

CLASSIC ART: UNDERWORLD DWELLERS!
Nothing can be more representative so far in showcasing the shades of grey realms prevalent within the original six-film STAR WARS saga (and its animated spin-offs) created by George Lucas than the diverse range of formidable and iconic bounty hunters that have pursed their prey, and their payments, across the galaxy-personified at the top of the rotting tree by the iconic and seemingly invincible Boba Fett, as seen in this great limited edition ACME ARCHIVES/Sideshow Collectibles art print from a few years back.
The recent addition of talented Game of Thrones creative geniuses and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to the STAR WARS universe for another set of all-new films, beyond those being developed by Rian Johnson, is a further bold and shrewd instinctual move from Kathleen Kennedy. Their love of dark side, shades of grey, morally bankrupt heroes and villains, as seen in their super translation of the George R. R. Martin books for HBO, makes them perfect custodians of what is rumoured to be an updated and even bigger version of what was once George Lucas's original TV plan for an 'Underworld'/opposite side of the fence view of the saga. Indeed, it had long been unconfirmed industry gossip that Benioff and Weiss (separately or together) were two of the original US line-up of writers (that also officially included modern GALACTICA scribe Ronald D. Moore) to have worked on that aborted series' completed, hugely ambitious scripts, to have been produced by Lucas with Rick McCallum. If that is indeed the case, the duo's journey (or return journey) to the Lucasfilm fold is more noteworthy than ever...
Five reasons why the duo are perfect for the new STAR WARS era:

And no sooner were they officially aboard then the duo were sadly departed:

'SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE' AT 20: CANTINA CONFRONTATION!
He's snagged his biggest bounty yet in the carbonized Han Solo he plans on delivering to Jabba the Hutt, but actually getting to Tatooine in one piece to claim that subsequent monetary prize? Well, that's gonna be a lot harder than Boba Fett thinks, especially when his rivals also want a share of the pie, as seen on the cover of SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE's comic adaptation Issue 2, from 1996. Great art from Hugh Fleming for DARK HORSE COMICS.

CLASSIC IMAGE: Z FOR ZUCKUSS
The scene where Darth Vader initiates a group of deadly Bounty Hunters into finding the Millennium Falcon remains one of the many highlights of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. This motley band includes humanoids, aliens and a droid-all soon to become iconic figures in the STAR WARS saga and particularly within its Expanded Universe.
One of the most mysterious of the pack must surely be Zuckuss, as played by the once out of the limelight Catherine Munroe. Check out our exclusive interview with the friendly actress from a few years back, here:

| Jack Klaff as the doomed John D in STAR WARS. |
JACK KLAFF
Respected
stage and screen actor Klaff played the fight pilot John D. (as in John Doe)
for two days of filming in July 1976. According to the script, the pilot he
played was a veteran of many fighter missions. They (Lucas/the technicians)
asked him beforehand if he was okay about being blown up in the fighter cockpit
and after it happened they gave him a wet towel to put on his face to help him
acclimatize whilst getting out of the set. He recalls a modest Lucas quietly
thanking him for his work. Klaff was then asked by LUCASFILM to come back for
some extra filming a short time later, but, at the time, he was in numerous
Shakespearean theatre acting roles and wasn’t available.

| Zuckuss has a sit down between bouts of bounty hunting! |
CATHERINE MUNROE
Yes,
the actress who played the legendary Zuckuss-she’s alive-she exists-she’s
real!!!
Coming
straight out of acting school, EMPIRE was one of her first film jobs and she
was the best fit for the costume of Bounty Hunter Zuckuss. The mask was very
heavy and attached on her almost like one of those ancient diving helmets,
which was clasped onto a neck section (like her fellow alien, Bossk’s, as worn
by Alan Harris). In the heavy costume, and being the only female actress to
inhabit one on the set, she had a personal helper who would assist her in
sitting down on a chair between takes (as can be seen in the classic black and
white image). After completing her four weeks at ELSTREE (most of the time
spent on the Star Destroyer Bridge-it took a long period to set up each part of
her filming with the other Bounty Hunters for that brief scene), she was asked
to come back for two weeks for some additional Bespin shooting and played a
female Mrs. Snaggletooth (the actor playing Mister Snaggletooth is unknown to
us), wearing a blue outfit, who can be seen very briefly in the
final film.
She
became very good friends with Chris Parsons as they were roughly the same age
and both very young, "we were only kids really" was her phrase. She
is still in contact with Chris Parsons and they remain friends. She recalled
how tight the security was on the EMPIRE set and that, although she has some
personal Polaroid shots of herself and some of the other background artists as
aliens on one of the Bespin Cloud City corridors, nobody was allowed to take
pictures of themselves on the actual sets.
She
had done a little TV work before doing EMPIRE (including a part in the 1979
DOCTOR WHO story THE HORNS OF NIMON, playing a sacrificial victim alongside
BLUE PETER presenter to be Janet Ellis). Sadly, unlike Chris Parsons, she
didn’t get a chance to play any parts in RETURN OF THE JEDI.
When
asked why she has been rarely seen at fan events/conventions (she has appeared
at one Japanese event (which she thoroughly enjoyed and was overwhelmed by the
friendliness and emotions of the fans there), and at least two signings in the
UK), she explained that fans have had difficulty finding her due to her name
Catherine Munroe having changed to Katy Jarrett.
