'SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE' AT 20: IN XIZOR'S DOMAIN!
On a mission to discover the truth about the murder attempts on Luke Skywalker, and to see if Prince Xizor's offer to join the Rebel cause is truly genuine, Princess Leia Organa, in her pre-ROTJ Boushh disguise, gets more than she bargained for in her first encounter with the Falleen overlord, in this great art by Hugh Fleming for the popular STAR WARS GALAXY magazine Issue 7, Spring 1996, specially promoting the SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE multi-media experience.

'SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE' AT 20: BLASTER TIME!
One of its key aspects was to provide some welcome new storytelling for our Classic Trilogy heroes in the gaps between EPISODEs V and VI, but let's face it, LUCASFILM were also keen to merchandise the characters - and the new heroes and villains they'd be mixing with/fighting against - to the maximum inside this multi-media extravaganza, especially for the ever advancing world of computer gaming, as the SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE Nintendo 64 game arrived to a million sales from STAR WARS fans and game players worldwide, making the most of the shadier sides of Steve Perry's written adventure, notably Black Sun's Prince Xizor and the smuggler for hire in Dash Rendar.
If anyone knows the artist/s of the above promotional art piece, please get in touch.

THE CLONE WARS SEASON FIVE. AFICIONADO's TOP FIVE EPISODES. NUMBER ONE: 'EMINENCE'
![]() |
| Deadly new alliances are forged in Eminence! Images: LUCASFILM ANIMATION. |
Here's five reasons why Eminence was our Numero Uno!
![]() |
| Darth Maul reveals his Force might against Bo Katan. |
1. Saga Enemies Unite! The kind of team-up we'd always dreamt about when playing with our PALITOY/KENNER figures during our formative years- now amazingly come alive thanks to George Lucas bold idea, with the kind of assembled quadruple threat villainy that could give MARVEL's THE AVENGERS a run for their money, let alone the STAR WARS universe heroes. The Maul brothers, the Mandalorian Death Watch, newcomers the Pyke Syndicate, together with the large-scale criminal universe belonging to the Black Sun organisation. They all hate and distrust one another, obviously, but in the end its the power of revenge and greed that binds them together. The benevolent Duchess Satine and the rest of the universe don't stand a chance!

| A return to the nightmare well of Mustafar... |
2. Fused Universes. Black Sun on the volcanic hell of Mustafar (quite a busy little planet that one!), Hutts on Tatooine and Nal Hutta, the outcast Sith brothers found in deep space (a nice visual nod to the beginning of ALIENS), the flying Mandalore Death Watch. Heck, even ineffectual but great to see in action Gamorrean Guards! This episode's supremely enjoyable, dizzyingly fast visual and storytelling pace sees a wealth of planets and battles satisfyingly mixed together and ripe for epic conflict, well handled by writer Chris Collins and director Kyle Dunlevy, with CG Supervisor Joel Aron and the brilliant animation team clearly working overtime on this ambitious entry. It's the perfect fusion of Classic and Prequel Trilogies characters and environments that only THE CLONE WARS animated series could do, and so well, particularly fleshing out the other parts of the under-rated Prequels beyond Anakin's overall storyline in the films.

| Black Sun heads will roll... |

| Hard-hatted Embo (middle) and the Bounty Hunters retaliate. |
4. The Return of the Bounty Hunters. Pushing in on the Hutt territories, the slug empire soon decides that, to fight such powerful encroaching superb baddies, you need equally resourceful opponents- popular anti-hero bounty hunters Sugi, big hatted fan favourite Embo (soon to be seen in the "Bonus Content" Rush Clovis storyline), Marrok, Latts Razzi and Dengar (thankfully not voiced by Simon Pegg this time around-the producers presumably having learnt their lesson!) give Maul, Vizsla and co. a headache they'll not soon forget, but ultimately failing to stop them, during a beautifully rendered and edited action sequence, showing all the skilled combatants in their prime, within the core of Nal Hutta. Swatting them away like flies, Maul ultimately can't be bothered to kill the bounty hunters- instead they escape to fight another animated day!
5. A State of War. Black Sun may be down, but the still powerful Hutt crime empire tries to retain its independence from Maul and Vizsla's ambitions. But its not for long- soon that duo's gathering force strikes a further incredible blow beyond Nal Hutta and their slaying of Oruba, attacking the heart of Jabba the Hutt's palatial territory on Tatooine!Having previously seen the power and dominion of the Hutt empire in film, TV and the Expanded Universe, their might having threatened to damage the Republic in the first THE CLONE WARS movie, its genuinely unnerving to see Jabba and co. being so soundly, but credibly, defeated!

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'STAR WARS - SCOUNDRELS' NOVEL
![]() |
| Unusual suspects plan the ultimate "job" in STAR WARS: SCOUNDRELS. |
STAR WARS - SCOUNDRELS
A novel by Timothy Zahn
Published in UK hardback by CENTURY
PUBLISHING
Reviewed by Scott Weller
The
con is on!
Our legendary pilot and smuggler Han Solo has
taken on some risky jobs in the past but this may be his greatest and most life
threatening challenge yet, as fan favourite author Timothy Zahn’s Classic
Trilogy era heist adventure, Scoundrels,
finally makes its way into hardback release in the UK, from CENTURY PUBLISHING.
Getting away from the massive plot lines of the
past but still delivering some deft plotting, Oceans Eleven meets STAR WARS is how the publicity blurb describes
the novel, and they’re right for the most part, but also with a heavy dose of Mission: Impossible throw in for good
measure- the only thing Scoundrels
doesn’t have from that show is Martin Landau’s clever make-up disguises!
Out of luck and needing money with the escalating
price on his head courtesy of Jabba the Hutt and his goon squad, Corellia’s finest
star child and his loyal friend and first mate Chewbacca are hired by a
mysterious and shady employer, wanting revenge on a dangerous criminal,
Villachor, to break into his seemingly impregnable bank vault and retrieve his
fortune- a task that will not be easy with all the incredible and sophisticated
technology and manpower guarding it. But with a hundred and sixty-three million
credits up for grabs, Han soon has a plan- his wildest yet- for what could be the
job of the century, but knows he can’t pull it off without some considerable
and intriguing help (lithe safe cracking twins, an explosive expert, a
magician, a nervy acquisitions man, a top hacker, and a memory expert), as well
as the talents of an old acquaintance left sour from a previous business deal
gone belly up- Lando Calrissian.
Unbeknownst to them, however, is the additional
presence of the galaxy-spanning criminal organization Black Sun on the planet- two of its top members entrusting Villachor
with secret materials in the vault that bring even greater danger and risk to
our band of fortune and glory seekers, as well as attracting the attentions of
two of the Empire’s top undercover operatives. With such dangerous times ahead,
can Han ultimately trust any of the old and newcomers? And just who is using
who?
The first half of the book and the assembling
of the characters is strong, as are the villains and the story’s general locale
(for Las Vegas read the planet Wukkar and a massive party/celebration taking
background duties to all the madness ahead), but once it enters all-important
heist mode, what should be exhilarating and fun gets tediously bogged down in technobabble,
which is not what STAR WARS is about to me, and left me feeling a little battle
weary. Fortunately, the big action finale, involving one bizarre homage
sequence in which an Indiana Jones-esque Solo gets involved with a laser whip
and a moving boulder no less!, ends the book on a more positive note.
Set after STAR WARS but a year or so before
EMPIRE, and enjoyably between two classic Roy Thomas/Archie Goodwin MARVEL
comic storylines from 1978, the story has lots of continuity but is no slave to
it. On the hero side, the book gives us a little bit of background into why
Lando and Han hadn’t been getting along prior to their reunion on Bespin as
well as mildly setting up things to come by their next reunion in EMPIRE,
though I wonder if it might have been wiser if Zahn had placed the story a few
years before EPISODE IV and given things a bit more of a cleaner, less
continuity hassle slate.
For fans of Black
Sun-hearted villainy, its nice to see the organization properly represented
in a Zahn novel, as well as the welcome use of the pheromone overbearing
reptilian gangsters, the Falleen, who’ve had a good time of it in the STAR WARS
saga recently, what with their appearance in THE CLONE WARS animated series
final season. Plus, there’s a final link to EPISODE V badness that fans of Classic
Trilogy super-icons will enjoy.
Zahn’s own specially created band of STAR WARS
characters continues to grow within the Expanded Universe (and long-term
readers will be happy to see the return of his Alderaanian Rebel, Winter,
forming a key part of Solo’s posse), but this time out I found his new team overall
lacking charisma-they seemed pretty interchangeable for the most part and
didn’t have the presence of our main classic trio.
Despite its mixed bag status, Scoundrels proves itself as a great idea
for a novel, but it’s a bit too po-faced at times- Han and Lando keep their
necessary sardonic edges, but I think the adventure needed a writer who could
handle plotting as strongly as Zahn but someone who was also more adept at writing
larger than life characters and whom could have injected a little bit more
humour and zippiness into proceedings.
AFICIONADO RATING: Another sure-fire hit for
Zahn, still the king of Expanded Universe storytelling, but Scoundrels didn’t quite live up to
my very high personal expectations. 3.5 out of 5

"SOMETIMES HEROES FALL..." 'THE CLONE WARS' SEASON FIVE BEGINS!
Revenge, tragedy and betrayal: the evil of the Dark Side of the Force is escalating to a new crescendo of terror in the fifth season of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, making its stellar animated premiere on the US CARTOON NETWORK from tomorrow morning's new time slot.
And it looks even more of a packed season than anything we've seen previously, if that's possible, and presumably carrying on the multi-episode arcs storytelling of last season. We have the return of the Maul brothers, their alliance with Death Watch and the Black Sun crime cartel to take Mandalore, and the following civil war that branches out from it, a pissed off Darth Sidious out to restore brutal and bloody order to his grand scheme against the Republic, the building beginnings of resentment and bitterness towards the Jedi from the people they've sworn their lives to protect, a great adventure for Artoo and some of his Astro Droid buddies, Ahsoka and Ventress possibly joining forces, Padme reunited with ex-lover Clovis, and facing another assassination attempt, a huge epic battle on the Expanded Universe popular world of Onderon, and lots more angst and emotional struggle for Anakin and Obi-wan, their friendship often challenged in leading their galactic Clone Troopers ever further into conflict, as the war seems out of control and unstoppable leading up to the film events of EPISODE III.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: " SHADOW GAMES"
AFICIONADO REVIEW: "SHADOW GAMES"
A novel by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff
Published in the UK by ARROW BOOKS
Reviewed by Scott Weller
It's STAR WARS meets THE BODYGUARD in this new literary confection from popular Expanded Universe authors Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff, as that popular and cocky Corellian smuggler from the early nineties SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE multi-platform storytelling arc, Dash Rendar, returns for a spirited new adventure: SHADOW GAMES, published in paperback in the UK from ARROW BOOKS.
And this time, Rendar really has got his hands full in a shortly before A NEW HOPE set storyline that sees him and the crew of his Outrider smuggling ship- the wisecracking smart arse droid with a touch of FRASIER's Niles Crane about him: Leebo, and the mysterious and talented Nautolan co-pilot Eaden Vrill- having hit bad fortune from the prior blasts of an Imperial Star Destroyer chase, soon find themselves in the unlikely commission of a galaxy popular music star, Javul Charn, whom they quickly have to protect from the clutches of a deadly, and so far untraceable, stalker. The only problem being that said menace has a motus operandi so sophisticated and clever that he/she/they could be working either inside or out of the colourful and persuasive singers universe: and a killer whom could be lurking/operating from within her key staff and entourage located inside her expansive universe travelling private yacht, or being safely embedded within the millions of fans-human and alien- who flock to her ambitious concerts and relentlessly adore and pursue both her and her music career. Even the Galactic Empire itself, alongside the seedy underworld of the Black Sun criminal organisation, the latter of whom she seemingly has unseverable and life-threatened links, may have ties to this unrecognised foe. Dash may have the skills to unravel and remove the complex strands of lies, deceit and attempts on Javul's life- a woman of whom he is now well and truly under the beguiling spell of- but can even he ultimately guarantee her safety?
Authors of recent STAR WARS books have hit or miss incorporated elements from our own modern times into their series (I'm assuming so as to try and capture new younger readerships who have previously stayed away from the saga in its printed form). There has previously been a look/focus at the way news has been reported and manipulated in the FATE OF THE JEDI series, and here we have under the spotlight the life, times and world of a singer whose presence and popularity is Beyonce-like: Javul Charn is sassy, beautiful and consistently under the spotlight. Throughout the book, her position as a popular music star is certainly well explored amidst the drama and action of George Lucas's universe, where she comes across as a mostly well-developed character: feisty and possessing brains and absolute beauty, soon proving a fine, if secretive, sometimes elusive, foil for the big-headed, but ultimately big-hearted Dash Rendar in their journey of life, death and the entertainment industry. As for Rendar himself, with the prior SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE set between the important events of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI, his appearance at that then point in the saga saw him as an almost replacement for Han Solo, what with Harrison Ford's popular smugger now taken away to Jabba's palace on Tatooine, life-binded in Carbon Freeze. Now SHADOW GAMES presents us with a fun situation where both Rendar, having escaped Solo's limelight, has no choice, and despite some intense bitterness, but to call upon his old smuggling rival, pre-EMPIRE, for help, resulting in the character fireworks soon flying as they work to save Javul's life. Ultimately, theirs a fun pairing- an intriguing combination of Lucas and Expanded Universe creations, and the writers obviously have a lot of enjoyment creating their traded insults and oneupmanship as they take on all manner of weird and wonderful creatures, a recurring nuisance bounty hunter and the wrath of Black Sun's evil Falleen leader, Prince Xizor. The lovable Chewbacca the Wookiee, co-pilot of Solo's trusted Millennium Falcon, may not be in the tale, but his absence explanation is well thought out, especially if you like The Holiday Special! The authors interpretation of Solo, not always easy to bring to life on the written page (or Kindle), also works for the most part, and there's fun referencing/ linkages to future events and very familiar characters, as well as the usual mixing of worlds from across the three separate strands of STAR WARS universes: films, expanded and animation.
So, like all of Reaves prior tales in a galaxy far, far away, the ingredients are there for an interesting side road STAR WARS yarn. It may not be in the ambitious mega-league of Timothy Zahn-like books, but its strongly structured, full of wit and well described action (some of which feels a little James Bond-like, too), making it a perfect holiday read.

CLASSIC ART: WHEN VILLAINS MEET!
Here's another great piece of Hildebrandt brothers art from SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE- a classic scene where the mighty Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader, meets his new rival in the hunt for Luke Skywalker: the reptilian Prince Xizor of the galaxy spanning criminal empire, BLACK SUN.
Thursday, 2 December 2010
CLASSIC ART: TO SEDUCE A PRINCESS!
The evil head of the Black Sun criminal organisation, the reptilian Prince Xizor, prepares to use his natural pheromones to make Princess Leia (wearing her Boushh bounty hunter disguise) his next conquest, in this scene from the movie that sadly never was: SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE. This great art for the LUCASFILM marketing and merchandise campaign, created to test and generate fan interest for the soon to be re-released Classic Trilogy SPECIAL EDITION movies in 1997, was one of many pieces done in TOPPS card form back in 1995/6 by the esteemed Hildebrandt Brothers.
We've got THE CLONE WARS series and its great. Now, c'mon Mister Filoni and the gang, make SHADOWS an animated reality!
