Together, the royal heirs of both planets - Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A'lbaraan - working alongside the Jedi, have uncovered evidence that the conflict is being orchestrated by outside forces, and all signs point to the mysterious Path of the Open Hand, whom the Jedi also suspect of causing the disaster on Jedha.

With time- and answers - in short supply, the Jedi must divide their focus between helping quell the renewed violence on Eiram and E'ronoh and investigating the Path. Among them is Gella Nattai, who turns to the one person she believes can unravel the mystery but the last person she wants to trust: Axel Greylark. The chancellor's son, imprisoned for his crimes, has always sought to unburden himself of the weight of his family name. AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'THRAWN - ASCENDANCY: LESSER EVIL'

Will the chains of duty weigh heavily on Senior Captain Thrawn? Art by Magali Villeneuve.

As the building enemy forces of the powerful and manipulative alien allies the Grysk and Kilji Illumine prepare to attack/invade the prior weakened Chiss Ascendancy from both within and without, battle and tactical genius Senior Captain Thrawn of the Expansionary Defence Fleet, a dutiful and patriotic hero respected and feared by his friends and enemies alike, must play the ultimate gambit of his life and career in defending his species. The Battle of Sunrise awaits, needing all of Thrawn's knowledge and skills like never before in his biggest, boldest battle yet, and whose aftermath will irrevocably change and challenge his destiny in unexpected (?) ways...

Clocking in at a mammoth  500 plus page content, the 'Grand Master' of Star Wars' Expanded Universe fiction, Timothy Zahn, returns with another fan-pleaser. The final book in the Thrawn: Ascendancy saga, Lesser Evil, has lots, a lot of lots, to wrap-up with regards to plot strands and character arcs-wise. And, as usual, with the utmost expert efficiency, he does a splendid and absorbing job of dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's whilst also delivering a separate satisfying story full of building plot, space battle action and dramatic conflict/resolutions. This time out, Thrawn's backstory (and even family revelations) are opened up for exploration, whilst his battle comrades amongst the Chiss Expansionary Defensive Fleet also get a lot more to do in the story/action stakes before all are ultimately sent their separate ways by the books' highly satisfying and bittersweet ending, with an intriguing coda leading into what will be the resourceful alien tactician's new life in the service of the Galactic Empire. Or is he? They say things are not always what they seem...

The complete Ascendancy saga, available in the UK from Century.

A fine and fitting conclusion to this experimental trilogy of Star Wars yet not Star Wars science fiction adventure storytelling that only Zahn could have pulled off with his considerable flair. There is still much potential to be mined beyond Thrawn within the Chiss Ascendancy universe of heroes, villains and unusual species (like the Magys and their mysterious abilities within 'the Beyond') that the respected author will surely return to with positive zeal.

AFICIONADO RATING: 4 out of 5

SAMURAI WARS! OUT THIS MONTH: 'STAR WARS VISIONS: RONIN'

The Star Wars saga's distinctive homage ties to the universe of Japanese culture were fused into its very being back in 1973 - courtesy of the talented mind of George Lucas, whose particular love for the acclaimed films of director Akira Kurosawa, and for the Samurai warrior culture, were notable examples. Such celebrational influences, and more besides, continue to resonate within the franchise in all its aspects forty-five plus years on, what with the huge success of the experimental Star Wars Visions animated series on Disney+ last month, which itself has now spawned this intriguing new bestseller-for-sure novel from author Emma Mieko Candon: Star Wars Visions: Ronin, available from 23rd October, 2021 in the UK, hardback published by Century

Here's the official release info:

A mysterious former Sith wanders the galaxy in this stunning Star Wars tale. An original novel inspired by the world of The Duel from the Star Wars Visions animated anthology.

The Jedi are the most loyal servants of the Empire.

Two decades ago, Jedi clans clashed in service to feuding lords. Sickened by this endless cycle, a sect of Jedi rebelled, seeking to control their own destiny and claim power in service of no master. They called themselves Sith.

The Sith rebellion failed, succumbing to infighting and betrayal, and the once rival lords unified to create an Empire . . . but even an Empire at peace is not free from violence.

Far on the edge of the Outer Rim, one former Sith wanders, accompanied only by a faithful droid and the ghost of a less civilized age. He carries a lightsaber, but claims lineage to no Jedi clan, and pledges allegiance to no lord. Little is known about him, including his name, for he never speaks of his past, nor his regrets. His history is as guarded as the red blade of destruction he carries sheathed at his side.

As the galaxy's perpetual cycle of violence continues to interrupt his self-imposed exile, and he is forced to duel an enigmatic bandit claiming the title of Sith, it becomes clear that no amount of wandering will ever let him outpace the specters of his former life.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'THRAWN: ASCENDANCY - GREATER GOOD'

Fresh from his unique victory against the cunning Nakardum race, led by the evil Yin the Benevolent, Senior Captain Thrawn of the Chiss Ascendancy now faces a new set of problems that will test his mettle like never before: two powerful members of the Chiss council once more working together determinedly to usurp the the talented officer's building status of power and ability; further building treachery from several command rank officers in the Expansionary Defense Fleet (motivated by the need to re-establish their family lineage within the Ascendancy), and the urgent need to unravel the mystery objectives being perpetrated against his people by a subtly dangerous new enemy, soon proving themselves as master puppeteers building their forces and plans linked to another mysterious race blessed with powerful abilities similar to those described in 'the Force'. Now more than ever, with darkness and chaos escalating, it looks like the deck of life and war cards have been heavily stacked against our distinctive but resilient tactician...

Building on the previous acclaimed book launching his new trilogy, Timothy Zahn's Thrawn: Ascendancy: Greater Good has deceits, trials and tribulations, power games and heavy duty space conflicts galore. However, unlike book one, its middle section, mostly featuring the unusual alien threat subtly manipulating the Chiss Ascendancy's power-thirsting families from the inside out, sadly felt a bit of a chore to read for this particular reviewer, despite its clear importance in setting up events coming with the series conclusion later in the year. Additionally, Thrawn is more on the sidelines this time out than I would have liked him to be - again, a necessary storytelling move by the author as he guides his dramatic personae into their needed positions on the dramatic chess board). Thankfully, a strong conclusion makes Greater Good ultimately worthwhile as a reading enterprise. From its explosive revelations, I've no doubt that Zahn will go on to deliver another accomplished and unexpectedly surprising finale for the Expanded Universe's most popular character...

SECRET HISTORY, SECRET WARS! 'THRAWN - ASCENDANCY: CHAOS RISING' COMING THIS SEPTEMBER

The making of the villain we both admire and hate in equal measure, his origins finally revealed. The all-new Thrawn - Ascendancy trilogy, out this September, from Century.

We've now followed his progress as the ultimate Star Wars Expanded Universe humanoid villain for an incredible near thirty years, and across numerous best selling novels: from his seeming 'discovery' on an unknown world in the Outer Regions, to his swift and efficient rise up the ranks of the Imperial Navy hierarchy (an outsider resentfully accepted by his rivals), and to his ultimate leading of enemy forces that would complicate the New Republic and its iconic heroes during the critical years after the destruction of the second Death Star. A former spy of the most ingenious and resourceful kind for his own race, and later an officer seemingly loyal to Emperor Palpatine, he would be further recognised as the ultimate tactician, an intellectual warrior blessed with an all-round talent for evil. Thrawn has been all of these things and more to his beloved fanbase, within a rich history conceived by the equally popular and still unbeaten leader of the pack when it comes to the series long time novel adventures, Timothy Zahn. Now, the eagerly awaited Thrawn - Ascendancy: Chaos Rising takes us back to a different time and a different realm beyond everything we've ever known about Thrawn, kicking-off an all-new trilogy of uniquely different and uniquely alien adventures set in a time frame long before the Expanded Universe's introduction of the character, as the truth behind his origins and his true loyalties to his people, the mysterious but territory-loyal Chiss Ascendancy, is unlocked from its surely very complicated puzzle box.

Fresh yet full of all the elements that have made the previous entries in Thrawn's sphere of influence such a success with readers, Thrawn - Ascendancy: Chaos Rising is a welcome start to Star Wars fans Autumn reading, in UK hardback from Century, that will surely prove a well-plotted, momentum-building, surprises-packed epic for fans to devour yet also introduce them to new science fiction avenues, a new universe of sorts, for the franchise in novel form.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'RESISTANCE REBORN'

Courage under fire for our sequel heroes, as Resistance Reborn arrives in UK hardback.

Having been initiated successfully with the second prequel movie, the idea of publishing an all-new lead-in adventure to every Star Wars cinematic tale before its release has continued with both the sequel trilogy and the one-off movies, but to only varying degrees of success. The latest tie-in, Resistance Reborn, from newcomer author to the saga Rebecca Roanhorse (published in the UK by Century), is importantly charged with detailing the critical events that happened in the start of the year's gap between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, as the battle-weary General Leia Organa and her few surviving rag-tag heroes aboard the Millennium Falcon begin the long and dangerous road back to recruiting new leaders and fighters in their continuing conflict against the more universally dominant, thoroughly evil First Order. With help from old friends, including the iconic Rogue Squadron pilot Wedge Antilles, the heroes must liberate a group of captured influential names (one an important figure from Leia's pre-EPISODE VII senatorial past), secure a list of wanted suspects from the underworld on the legendary industry realms of Corellia, and steal as many decommissioned ships as possible from a far-off planet. All this whilst Leia is trying to set up a new secret base with the people of Ryloth, a deservedly bitter and suspecting race who are no strangers to fighting military threats since the days of The Clone Wars.

Though already an experienced speculative fiction author, Miss Roanhose's love of Star Wars is more important than ever in such a novel so eagerly-awaited by fans. And that love shines through in Resistance Reborn- clearly knowing how to write for the existing characters, giving Poe Dameron in particular more to do as the successor to a busy but physically withering Leia Organa. Sadly, new Jedi-to-be Rey and the dedicated-to-the-cause Finn, though also present in the story, ultimately feel sidelined from doing anything truly worthwhile, their destinies locked in 'hover mode' before J.J. Abrams gives them their final cinematic bow. Fans of the Expanded Universe post 2014, however, will be pleased with certain characters and referencing carefully included in this galaxy-spanning tale (mostly linked to Chuck Wendig's Aftermath trilogy and Claudia Gray's Bloodline), and there's some fair use of the aforementioned Antilles (Denis Lawson's character supposedly making a cameo for IX, too).

As for the overall story? Well, its plot reads great in the advance blurb but ultimately didn't win my full enthusiasm as a page-turner, lacking the kind of bold imagination and stirring action I thought was needed in this special case movie lead-in, to a film of such saga-ending significance as IX. It all felt to me that there was too much of a similar ilk done already in various storytelling media.

Ultimately, Resistance Reborn is perfectly readable stuff, and a solid effort. Yet, despite the author's commendably unabashed enthusiasm, it's certainly not the essential SW book collection purchase that it should have been, and deserved to be.

AFICIONADO RATING: 3 out of 5

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'DOOKU - JEDI LOST'

Dark fates await Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress in the all-new Dooku - Jedi Lost. Cover art by Aaron McBride.

Though Anakin Skywalker's journey into darkness is the lynchpin to the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, there were other Jedi from his era who'd also fall from grace and show great evil. Most notably, the nefarious, enigmatic and ruthlessly cruel figure of Count Dooku, as played in Episode's II and III by the stately presence with that classy veneer of evil that was silver-screen legend, Sir Christopher Lee. Now, in celebration of both the character and the man who played him, British author Cavan Scott gives us more on the origins of Dooku, born to nobility, becoming a once powerful Jedi, then a threat to the universe upon transferring his allegiances to the Sith, as Dooku - Jedi Lost's audio drama script gets a satisfying book release, available in the UK from Century Publishing.

Ever the imaginative storyteller, Scott uses Asajj Ventress, Dooku's own powerful Padawan for evil, as his key and unique framing device in launching the story, to peel back the dark layers of Dooku's past, his locked-away vulnerabilities, and soon future, whilst more facets of Ventress's own past, discovered and used by Dooku for twisted ends, are concurrently revealed.

Christopher Lee as the battle-scarred Count Dooku.

Removed from his linage of dynastic power on the Outer Rim world of Serenno by a Jedi seeker, an act of deliberate abandonment engineered by his powerful Father - a cruel leader despising of the Jedi (including his own son) and the Republic to whom they serve, Dooku's power is soon cultivated at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. But despite that potential goodness and the genuinely faithful service given to his Masters, as well as the benevolence and experience he gives as a role model teacher himself in his later years, Dooku's ego/arrogance, fused with driven ambition and greed to be the ultimate Jedi, alongside growing dark knowledge of secret Sith artefacts and prophecies at the Jedi Temple, assuredly launches his eventual steps towards the realms of darkness - true pride before a fall, bolstered by his frustration at his friends building inability to bring true peace and justice to the galaxy, of which even his closest confidants and later Padawan learners are not enough to keep him close to the side of light.

Dark times ahead for Dooku and Sifo-Dyas.

And Dooku's tragic family history already has ties to the Sith- the world of Serenno having been one of the sect's many empiric worlds from a thousand year before, whose now wary people are on the verge of rebellion against the Republic, egged on by his despot father. In Dooku - Jedi Lost, all these elements are well explored and used, as is the development of Dooku's problematic family ties (a weakness for his beloved sister being an important plot point) on a world he knows faces fiery oblivion, and which must be saved and shaped anew under his guidance, leading carefully to his eventual reign as Separatist Leader by the time of EPISODE II. In those final years before becoming one of 'The Lost Twenty', Dooku will further manipulate an old Jedi friend- the vulnerable Master Sifo-Dyas, a visionary on the brink of madness, who sees the dark future of the galaxy with building emotional intensity...

The many faces of Dooku. Art by Aaron McBride.

As the story reaches its darkest moments, Dooku- Jedi Lost proves a solid concoction from Cavan Scott that Prequel fans will enjoy. Most of the author's work in developing the Count feels right in the reading - a rare privilege to be able to bring so much more detail to such a popular Star Wars villain, including research that cleverly combines opinions and thoughts observed about the character from the late Mister Lee himself. Though I did have a problem in picturing Dooku as a pet person, as discovered here in moments that felt too Harry Potter-esque for my personal tastes, and not even during his prior positive status as a Jedi. (The choice of pet, however, soon proves key to the dark phoenix rising-esque idea perpetuated by the author.)

AFICIONADO RATING: Sith happens! From these interesting script/book foundations, there's lots of potential for a sequel drama showing Dooku properly assuming the mantle of Darth Tyranus alongside Darth Sidious, so let's hope that happens... 3.5 out of 5

But names can only get you so far, and Leia’s last desperate call for aid has gone unanswered.

From the jungles of Ryloth to the shipyards of Corellia, the shadow of the First Order looms large, and those with the bravery to face the darkness are scattered and isolated. If hope is to survive, the Resistance must journey throughout the galaxy, seeking out more leaders―including those who, in days gone by, helped a nascent rebellion topple an empire. Battles will be fought, alliances will be forged, and the Resistance will be reborn.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'THRAWN - TREASON'

Loyalties tested and warfare emergent for Grand Admiral Thrawn in Thrawn - Treason, out now from Century.

The eagerly awaited finale to the presumed second trilogy of the world famous SW Expanded Universe Uber villain Grand Admiral Thrawn is here, and once again his creator Timothy Zahn delivers a page-turning adventure with Thrawn - Treason, UK published by Century, that fans will be delighted by.

We last encountered Thrawn aligned with the formidable powers of his true rival Darth Vader, the infamous Dark Lord of the Sith and right hand man to the Emperor himself, the results of which, whilst keeping at bay a determinedly growing alien force emergent from the Outlying Regions of the galaxy, the alien leader would ultimately piece together Vader's true past identity as the once greatest Jedi, Anakin Skywalker. Now, in the aftermath of that stand firm conflict against the Grysk Hegemony, armed with the knowledge that the militaristic manipulators will undoubtedly cross into the Empire's territory sooner rather than later, the Grand Admiral returns back to Imperial Centre only to find himself mired in all-new conflicts with rivals old and new, at a critical time in the development of the Emperor's vision and stranglehold of the galaxy via the birth of a unique and powerful construction project nearing completion: code-named 'Stardust'. A development that, if successfully realized, may threaten Thrawn's own unique plans to aid the Empire, to whom he has allied his past and future ambitions so intrinsically in ways beyond anything from his past history and dedication as an esteemed warrior for his own species- the warriors of the Chiss Ascendancy.

The Grand Moff Tarkin will stop at nothing to achieve his own goals for power.

And Thrawn couldn't be more caught in a nest of viper's like the one established in Treason, primarily the pawn of a much larger game orchestrated by the infamous Grand Moff Tarkin, carving his own powerplay strategy against the ambitious, lower down the Imperial elite chain (but nonetheless rising up) determination of Director Orson Krennic, whose caretaker/orchestration of Stardust and its powerful and prestigious potential, though dogged by years of delays and production problems, has nonetheless gained him considerable grace and favour with the Emperor- a project he personally wishes complete whatever it takes. Tarkin, wanting Stardust and its power all to himself, is determined to unseat Krennic, even if means sacrificing Thrawn as part of that scheme. Krennic is already aware of Tarkin's underhand scheming, but Thrawn himself has no choice but to follow the undercurrents of battle between the two rivals- a mysterious scenario now affecting Stardust potentially threatening the go-ahead by the Emperor to the successful creation/production pipeline of his unique TIE Defender fighter program, rendering it forfeit and extinct through lack of funding.

Eli Vanto returns, alongside the efficient Chiss officer Admiral Ar'alani. Art by Darren Tan.

Entering into the Stardust problem, a certainly unique mystery is revealed- a seemingly natural and unusual situation nicely linked to The Empire Strikes Back, though its ultimate solving leads to even greater danger with the return of the Grysk threat, acting in ways more cunning, bigger in ambition than we discovered in book two, and whose powers in control of other races remain cruelly effective. As Treason carefully unspools the threat, plot strands and characters from book one return to provide an effective closing symmetry to this trilogy finale. We discover just what happened to Thrawn's friend Eli Vanto, the Imperial officer with whom he developed a strong early rapport with, and who disappeared under a cloud a year earlier, seemingly never to return to the Star Destroyer Chimera. Under mysterious orders and a shroud of secrecy, Vanto now acts as the ultimate race relations liaison of sorts with the Chiss, of which his reemergence during a critical point sees him uncomfortably caught between worlds just like Thrawn has been over the decade since his 'discovery'. Cleverly, Vanto is our window into the world of Thrawn and his unique gifts, though he too now understands what it's like to be a stranger in a strange but fascinating land.

Zahn adds further intriguing facets to the alien Chiss, notably introducing a female warrior the equivalent to Thrawn, Admiral Ar'alani, unhappy with his seeming defection to the enemy side with the Empire and always probing where his true loyalties lie. The Chiss have a sense of honour and clan power basing not unlike the Klingons of the modern Star Trek series, it seems- a unique race with more secrets about their personal nature and technology to be revealed in future media-related tales, for sure.

With Death Troopers at his side, Director Orson Krennic remains steadfast to the 'Stardust' project.

Despite lots of advance publicity, the only real disappointment to the book is the true lack of Director Orson Krennic within the story. He was such an interesting baddie, not an elitist but an angry man with a grudge who had had to work hard to join the ranks, within the core of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I'd hoped he would properly lock horns with the Grand Admiral throughout the entire story. Sadly, despite one Imperial meeting chapter early on, they share little time together, the potential character clashing of the story instead relayed via one of Krennic's less interesting yet key lackeys. A genuine wasted opportunity - perhaps the author was restricted in using the character for some reason on the Lucasfilm creative side?

But Zahn, whose writing style is never less than subtly depthful and efficient, instinctively knows how to give the Expanded Universe lovers more of what they want, and what that 'more' is is Thrawn. With his strategic and tactical genius, he continues to shine under his creator's storytelling, always able to out-think, out-anticipate and jump three steps ahead of all his rivals, leading his taskforce to an ending that pulls out all the stops via a forty-page finale space battle split in two, as opponents lock horns and laser cannons in conflicts that will surely blow the minds of Imperial Navy fans and those SW readers who appreciate battle tactics in both history and the franchise's history. The battles not just showcasing Thrawn but the book's other core characters most effectively too, including his efficient and capable female second-in-command, Faro.

Will Thrawn's post Star Wars Rebels fate be revealed in a later trilogy?

So, a satisfying end to this already acclaimed new trilogy featuring the complex and enigmatic alien warrior who serves the Empire with thoughtful distinction. But will there will be more of Thrawn? I'm more than certain there will be- some interesting little plot strands are resolved, but most can be reopened and expanded. Just as Harrison Ford is Han Solo, I'm sure there's a lot of Thrawn (in a good way, of course) is buried within Timothy Zahn's DNA. And where there's intrigue and warfare to come, from whichever side of the galaxy he may end up, the Grand Admiral will be centred at the bridge of the Chimera, ready and waiting to serve in the Emperor's name and legacy...

AFICIONADO RATING: It's Thrawn. It's Zahn. It's a must-have! 4 out of 5

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'THRAWN - ALLIANCES'

Evil attracts. Thrawn and Vader - together at last, in Thrawn: Alliances. Out now in UK hardback from Century.

Time for Thrawn to face his future. Time for Vader to face his past.

NOTE: This review contains mild SPOILERS!

The two greatest villains from across the realms of the Galactic Empire join forces against a unique threat, whose consequences of engagement will surely change the future of the mysterious outer regions forever. Acclaimed science fiction author and STAR WARS Expanded Universe literary giant Timothy Zhan continues his trilogy tapestry for the unique alien leader Thrawn with book two in his trilogy: Thrawn: Alliances, out now in the UK from Century, and no doubt breaking book sales figures worldwide as you read this...

Still Zahn's greatest character triumph from across all his long-term SW entries, Thrawn's against-the-odds rise to power (though he himself never doubted his abilities) from book one of this new trilogy has seen him overcome those human xenophobes jealous and despising of him within the heart of the Empire. Thrawn now has the command, power and responsibilities he seeks, but as Alliances starts he has almost lost the favour of the Emperor after his failures on Atollon against Rebel cell leader Kanan Jarrus, in a present timeline set after the events of STAR WARS Rebels Season Three finale. The ominous, brooding and truly deadly rival to him for the Emperor's favour, Darth Vader, despite his impressive skill sets for evil and destruction, is also at a crossroads of sorts, as he joins Thrawn at the Emperor's command in his vast chambers on Coruscant.

Their master having detected an unusual disturbance in the force, the omnipotent figures are dispatched to the remote Outer Regions edged world of Batuu for investigation and to take whatever steps are required to acquire or neutralize the potential danger. But Batuu, despite its remoteness, is ultimately no strange environment for the duo. In fact, it is a familiar one in the past from a previous visitation that proved just as dangerous and influential in their lives. But that was another time, another place, from a history when they were both different men with different allegiances.

Thrawn's tactical abilities are put to further effective use in Alliances.

Indeed, Batuu is a returned nexus point for the past and future of the once famed Jedi Knight and Republic war hero General Anakin Skywalker, and his discovery of the efficient alien warrior Thrawn before he became a part of the Empire, when the alien outsider was formerly one of the top commanders of the Chiss Ascendancy, out to discover more about the nearby Republic and their waging civil war whilst on his own furtive secret mission....

In and out of major Clone Wars conflict and haunted by the recent departure of his former Padawan Ahsoka Tano, our restless young human hero has his own purpose in travelling to that remoteness of Batuu- the disappearance of his beloved secret wife Padme Amidala, off there to liaise with one of her most loyal former bodyguards, Duja, on some important information. With his trust having to be earned, Anakin is at first wary of the newly arrived Thrawn, from a race ever before encountered by this Jedi Knight, also investigating a mystery linked to his species. His instincts never better, Anakin recognises Thrawn's abilities and underlying mystery as they join forces, becoming highly curious abut the Chiss race and their technologies in the process as their missions gel, alongside a resultant locking of strong will, intellects and ideologies- Thrawn's talent at observation, information gathering and resultant action, and in not making mistakes or taking rash revenge against his enemies, clashing with the young Jedi's often impulsive and arrogant behaviour- headstrong ways that he refuses to let go of. Traits that will ultimately propel him towards his Sith destiny...

Deep in her own mystery, Padme Amidala is a welcome addition to the adventure.

Soon enough in their specialized efforts they will encounter smugglers, a band of dangerous nomads that will prove a threat to the Republic and Chiss, and witness the manipulation of vital hyper space lanes heading out into the unknown- power too dangerous to ignore in the wrong hands. Even in the outer regions, it seems that the threat of the Separatists is never too far away either, at a time when Count Dooku, through his intermediaries, prepares to unleash one of his most diabolical plans yet on the heart of the Republic, and the danger builds to the life of the far away Padme Amidala. For Thrawn, meanwhile, the stakes are even larger, involving legacy secrets from his race's past that must never be allowed to be exploited by others.

As they work together in the future, and those old memories resurface, Thrawn solidifies his private suspicions and instincts as to just who the former man behind the mask alongside him could be. Yet Vader's true identity - he calls his former person the simply titled 'The Jedi' -  is one secret that must forever be kept at all costs, alongside his persistent and growing doubts about Thrawn's loyalty to the Emperor, of which he keeps his itchy trigger finger near his crimson bladed lightsaber. As the new threats emerge, scenarios echo - Vader, as ever, all in favour of the hard-edged approach in using the power of the Force and the might of the Empire to its fullest, Thrawn preferring the more subtle ways of garnering information on possible enemies- ever the shrewd tactician, though as clever and brutal a warrior in the galaxy when needed to be.

In service to the Empire!

It's fair to say that these aspects of the book are far and away some of Zahn's finest moments within the new Expanded Universe, of which the past and future team-ups of Thrawn and Anakin/Vader in the STAR WARS universe mostly live up to the pre-release hype, both of the complicated personas whom we shouldn't really like but always want to root for! Their compelling natures, instincts and abilities make for a fine read alongside some skilled character building by Zahn. Full marks too for his rendering of Padme Amidala's related sections of the story- her intelligence and spirited heroism are nicely rendered-I'd like to see Zahn do another prequel book with more of his own special take on the prequel heroine.

Zahn never fails to deliver fine supporting characters in his tales, and Alliances is no exception. Amongst the pawns under the command of the Empire's finest are an efficient Stormtrooper squad commander whose legion stands ready to Vader, whilst Thrawn has the notable female commander Faro, as well as the ever dutiful and highly lethal Noghri bodyguard Rukh as his aggressive sentinel- the small but lethal creature's eyes always watching, with an invisibility screen ever primed and ready for surveillance and attack, especially in the book's close-quarters combat finale!

Uneasy partnership! Anakin and Thrawn in alternate key art for the book release.

On top of the strong tensions behind such prime movers, Zahn gives us lots of memorable treats capable of being genuine crowd pleasing moments were they cinematic - the duo on speeder bikes, the idea of Vader being incognito and unrecognised on a world outside the Empire's grip, unique killer insects potentially cable of immobilising even a Dark Lord, as well as a slightly morbid use of the Force by Anakin to manipulate a corpse as part of a plan to expose pirates. Plus Thrawn uses a lightsaber (albeit briefly) whilst Vader uses his Force sensitive skills as part of an all new encompassing ability. And who doesn't like Vader going in to space combat, eh? This time in one of Thrawn's unique new TIE defenders no less!

Soon to become an important part of the Disney Star Wars theme park universe flagship being built in the US, the Wild West/out-on-the-frontier styled Black Spire township, of which prior reference to the site and its reputation for being difficult to locate cropped up during Solo: A Star Wars Story, Zahn effectively delivers us to Batuu and its diverse hubbub of aliens throughout the book, an environment where you can always rely on a local Cantina being on hand to serve drinks and remove any post-conflict bodies post-haste!

Overall, as the books reaches its ramifications filled finale, I had perhaps been hoping that Alliances would be a grander and more ambitious story alongside the notable character interactions, but Zahn's grand plan for the trilogy will surely see the fireworks coming to the fore with the book three wrap up in a year or so's time, alongside a notably absent supporting character from the first book of the trilogy. Importantly, Zahn's grasp of the STAR WARS universe and its characters never fails to be impeccable, with Alliances yet another classy read. Having been underutilized for the most part in Rebels, Thrawn's reemergence in the revised Expanded Universe has been most welcome, truly at his best here in the printed dimension- calculated, subtly menacing and, above all else, distinctly alien.

And so the legacy of Thrawn and the Chiss Ascendancy continues, whilst the Empire prepares to makes its next bold moves against emergent threats unlike anything encountered before...

Roll on 2019!

AFICIONADO RATING: Within a satisfying plotting mix of timelines, incidents and action, Zahn gives us a worthy union between figurehead icons of darkness, both of whom are well utilized and showcased. With such attractions, Thrawn: Alliances is well worth the purchase for Prequel and Classic Trilogy fans alike. 4 out of 5

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'LAST SHOT'

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD...

When you've lived the fast, exciting and dangerous times that spiky and hard to pin down galactic smuggler Han Solo and entreprenurial/gambler and all-round super smooth Lando Calrissian have, its inevitable that their pasts will someday catch up with them. And not necessary for the better, either, as a mysterious and bizarre set of circumstances comes back to haunt the duo and threaten their lives anew, within Daniel Jose Older's effective showcase novel for our heroes that also acts as a loose tie-in of sorts to the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars StoryLast Shot, emerging brightly from UK hardback Hyperspace courtesy of CENTURY.

Past Prologue! Smooth operator Lando Calrissian is back at the Falcon's controls!

And it's the first failed assassination attempt on Lando at his infamous Tibanna gas mine at Bespin's Cloud City that sets the whole avalanche of Last Shot's events off- wrought by a mysterious Pau'an scientist soon identified as Fyzen Gor- the STAR WARS equivalent of Doctor Frankenstein! Though his presence is sadly lacking in modern STAR WARS sequels, the charismatic former Baron - here the STAR WARS equivalent of Shaft - shows just what a great character he is, and always has been, right from the get-go, literally taking on his opponents in just a bathrobe, and literally after a steamy night of passion with his latest girlfriend- a blast from the past Twi-lek who may have caught him for good. What a guy! But even Lando needs help from time to time- help he knows and can trust in the form of old buddy Han, also linked in his own thread to Gor, in order to solve the mystery of a stolen transmitter containing secrets and technological abilities once and now clearly important to parties both shady and Imperial that have also also sprung from their separate incidents in history-events linking back to Han's later ownership of the Millennium Falcon from ten years earlier, and a unique job with his former first 'wife' Stana, alongside former partner Chewie, that turned sour, and an unusual encounter Lando would equally have five years before in that said freighter, alongside his then trusty droid co-pilot and confidante, L3-37.

A post ROTJ Han Solo is soon back in action!

Around these events, the book's ultimate time framing device is set two years after the landmark Battle of Jakku, and with the recent arrival of young and emotionally swaying Ben Solo, whose cute side, for the most part, is winning over his sulking Dark Side potential edginess lain dormant within him even back then. Despite clear love for his brood, Papa Han is still very much the 'manchild', completely clueless about fatherhood and his position as part of the New Republic, soon eschewing back to a more grounded place for himself as the scoundrel curmudgeon adventurer of his glory days, going from star to star, and not bogged down in procedures and the much paper shuffling brought by his new responsibilities of which he helped to create. This new escapade linked to the Falcon's former owner looks more neck-threatening than ever, but Han can't resist the call to investigate this building affair that his 'respectable' friends can't get involved in, which has to be handled 'outside the books'. And besides, he owes Lando one!

As the past history and threat of mad scientist Fyzen Gor is eventually revealed, our duo is accompanied on their journey by a pair of Lando's unique friends, rendered effectively enough within the story by Older- the aforementioned sexy Twi'lek, Kaasha Bateen - an old flame to Lando and fellow war hero blessed with keen blaster skills, and a grumpy Ugnaught droid mechanic, Florx Biggles, who'd rather sleep than work. Harkening back to the actual film saga, however, there's also a welcome cameo linked to Lando, with the ever faithful android implanted servant from Cloud City, Lobot. Plus, much to the chagrin of Han Solo (and Harrison Ford if he'd ever played the role onscreen in this book), a chirpy female Ewok, Peepka, who also happens to be a top slicer for the New Republic ( I know! - go figure!), as well as a meeting with an altogether different kind of Gungan than our characters or readers have previously encountered!

Unable to use the Falcon, for its being too high-profile, and adding to the weirdness around them, the foursome have to rely on an unusual young human pilot and his equally unique first mate for their travelling- a pair seemingly keen to follow in the footsteps and legend of their role models in Han and Chewie, which doesn't impress the Corellian legend one darn bit! From the jaunty realms of Maz Kanata's bar/base on Takodana, to a grimy prison planet and beyond to the far realms of space, a wide variety of of seedy aliens and repellent monsters large and small will cross paths and blaster target hairs, culminating in an encounter that will need all the quirky skills our truly diverse band have to stop a brutal wave of inhuman slaughter from being waged across the galaxy.

Back to an earlier time for Han and Chewie.

Having been clearly impressed with the prior Aftermath series by Chuck Wendig (watch out for a character from that saga making a cameo appearance!), Daniel Jose Older gives his tale a similar, darker, more adult theme, whilst clearly having a fun time being immersed in that 'other side' of George Lucas's universe linked to crime, skullduggery and deception. He also displays his capable grasp of STAR WARS storytelling that fulfills the continued ambitions and directives of the Lucasfilm Story Group. As the efficient interconnecting timeline unfolds, the characters blossom- the smooth and capable Lando, in particular, being well rendered, whilst Han couples getting older with his prior reputation as the cynical, mildly egocentric, balls-to-the wall gung-ho action figure who never does the expected. And Han's a scoundrel who has two women in his life in this book: Princess Leia in the Now and the equally formidable smuggler heroine Sana Starros, prior introduced in MARVEL, for the Then.

Chewbacca undergoes a mission for his Wookiee race.

Kashyyyk's finest, the truly mighty Chewbacca, will eventually accompany the team on their mission too, linked to a spate of mysterious disappearances and mutilations on his world that may involve Doctor Gor, and there's the required smattering of subtle moments referencing the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. By far the biggest link to the new film is clearly the addition of Lando's all-attitude droid L3-37, brought to life well in Older's story in a most relevant way, partaking at the opposite end of the Then's plot strand, as she takes Lando on a journey to find the elusive Phalanx transmitter, keenly aware of its ultimate sophistication and danger to human life. It's a worthy pre-film release introduction to L3-37, an ever-developing, super-smart character, looking set set to be a promising addition to the continuing cinematic roster of characters and droids.

Secrets revealed by L3-37.

Ultimately, the main concept of droid revolution is nothing new in the STAR WARS Expanded Universe- Classic MARVEL paved the way with a notable adventure with Threepio and Artoo back in 1980 - but this is something done on a bigger platform, with Older adding a macabre and at times chilling layer of grim horror via his Brotherhood of Wire and Bone. Back to Aftermath, its success in revamping SW background characters in all-new ways, like the Battle Droid of the Prequels - the blood-thirsty 'Mister Bones', influences Older in trying a similar tack- giving the tainted Ewoks some respectability via the aforementioned tech whizz who evolves the race beyond anything originally seen in Return of the Jedi. Whether that one works, however, depends greatly on your own point of view!

AFICIONADO RATING: The late Brian Daley's Han Solo trilogy of the seventies still has no serious competition, but the much-hyped Last Shot is engaging enough. If anything this is more of a deserving showcase for past and future Lando fans tale than Han Solo ones, so the alternate cover sleeve wraparound is welcome. Adding to the overall enjoyment is the fact that Daniel Jose Older's work reads as if it could easily have been published for either the original or new iteration of the Expanded Universe of STAR WARS fiction - no mean feat. 3.5 out of 5
