EPISODE VIII: 'DON'T JOIN!'

He's successfully sold out young Resistance fighters Finn and Rose Tico to the First Order with the failure of their Star Destroyer infiltration, now the enigmatic rogue known as the DJ is preparing to take away and enjoy his excessive loot for his traitorous actions, in a tense scene from The Last Jedi.

We know that the DJ survived the 'Holdo Manuever' attack and fled across the galaxy. Perhaps the character, as played with creepy modern-day significance by Benecio Del Toro, will return for another Star Wars film or Andor-style TV project?

No matter what anybody thought about the now controversial The Last Jedi, there's no denying that the assembled film cast for the 2017 adventure couldn't have been better, especially when led by such a fun and iconic star presence in Mark Hamill, back once more to play Luke Skywalker.

A great posed publicity shot of the cast taken in the US, alongside the ever enthusiastic writer/director Rian Johnson, making the most of the film's expansive worldwide publicity needs.

EPISODE VIII: A 'ROSE' BY ANY OTHER NAME...

Dedicated in her duty to preserve the remnants of the Resistance, mechanic now heroine Rose Tico joins former Stormtrooper Finn on an on important and perilous mission undercover aboard the enemy's immense flagship, the Supremacy, posing as a top ranking First Order officer, where, on and off camera, she'd impeccably wear a military outfit for The Last Jedi in a way that impressed the film's legendary costume designer, Michael Kaplan.

Finn takes the lead navigating the Supremacy.

The original sequence of Rose and Finn on the Supremacy was ultimately truncated down for time and pacing reasons from the The Last Jedi's final cut, but you'll be able to see the deleted scenes (part of fourteen assembled) on next month's Blu-ray/DVD/release from Lucasfilm/DISNEY. Before that, however, you can read all about it, and so much more great adventure besides, within the eagerly-awaited novel from SW stalwart Jason Fry, presented in a special 'Extended Edition' novel adaptation containing all-new material officially sanctioned by writer/director Rian Johnson and the dedicated Lucasfilm Story Group. The CENTURY hardcover release in the UK is March 8th, 2018.

On the stolen Libertine space yacht, Finn and BB-8 discover just how shady their host in rogue hacker 'DJ' (as in 'Don't Join') really is, in a tense scene from The Last Jedi that briefly but effectively showcases the greed and corruption that war brings- a very real shades of grey morality issue branching into the STAR WARS universe form our own real and troubled world.

EPISODE VIII: BEWARE THE 'DJ'!

SPOILERS! Ever since first seeing him onscreen as the distinctive, bloodthirsty villain Dario in the gritty 1989 James Bond actioner Licence to Kill, I have continued watched Benecio Del Toro's career with, as Palpatine would say, "great interest". So it's been fun to see this often Indie film star delve into the realms of big-league science fiction and fantasy in recent years, what with his turn as the bizarre The Collector for the MARVEL franchise, and now as the quirky, mysterious and surely highly dangerous 'DJ', apparently a top information thief and broker working for whomever will pay him the most money, and the man needed by the Resistance for whatever secrets he currently possesses.

It will be great to see what delicious edgy spirit and bleak humour this fine and highly regarded actor will bring to the STAR WARS universe.

Friend...or foe?

CLASSIC IMAGE: RED IS DEAD!

Still making waves today as one of STAR WARS greatest villains, Ray Park, as the fearless and lethal Darth Maul, poses for an early EPISODE I promotional image. Interestingly, according to the film's second unit director Roger Christian, American actor Benecio Del Toro was originally lined-up to play the role but ultimately backed out when it was discovered that the evil villain would have few lines of dialogue.

“It wasn’t until I had the contact lenses in and I was in the costume that people became a bit funny towards me. You could tell they couldn’t focus on me, and it wasn’t so much because they were scared of me, but because it was just really strange.

“I gave George a certain look for the character and he loved it, and that gave me a basis to how the character should behave. I basically tried not to show any feelings, and just tried to project a sense of terror.”

RAY PARK- STAR WARS UK FAN CLUB JEDI JOURNAL MAGAZINE ISSUE 2.2 - SUMMER 2001

“I think the voice (by Peter Serafinowicz) is excellent. Peter did a great job. His voice really suits the part. My voice may not have been right. I’m not bothered about it. It’s not a big speaking part anyway. It would have felt really good to do everything, but I acted the role, and I did the physical action, so it’s me.”
