EPISODE I: WHAT HAPPENS ON TATOOINE...

All cover arts by Timothy Bradstreet.

The Phantom Menace's critics may often have complained that the film didn't have much plot for our main heroes to be involved in, but the drama taking place on Tatooine with our stranded heroes looking for a hyperdrive generator, and the introduction of Anakin, would open the doors to exciting side story potential that would be adeptly explored in comics via a special one-shoot, four-issue set of Dark Horse Comics.

Released in Summer 1999, each separately showcased Queen Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in some impressive work filling in the story gaps on the aforementioned desert planet, executed by a fine team of writers (including Ryder Windham and Henry Gilroy) and artists (including Martin Egeland and Steve Crespo). It's no surprise to me that the series was so well received by fans and later reprinted as part of Disney's Expanded Universe merchandise, via Marvel Comics.

Original Dark Horse Comic cover that would be re-used by Marvel.

A fifth mini-story also appeared exclusively for Wizard magazine.

EPISODE VIII: STORMTROOPERS - THE EVOLUTION CONTINUES...

The First Order Executioner stormtrooper with laser axe debuts in EPISODE VIII.

Visually and slickly upgraded in a way that their enthusiastic costume designer Michael Kaplan felt was appropriate for today's 'APPLE generation', the ground-pounder Stormtroopers of the chaos-causing First Order look set to bring further danger and menace to our Resistance heroes during the all-new struggles of The Last Jedi, out next month in cinemas.

The iconic Stormtoopers in all their superb variations across screen and media, both Imperial and First Order, as well as the Clone Troopers that Prequel-originated them, are the showcase of a lavish and informative new book, out now in the UK from HARPER DESIGN: Stormtroopers: Beyond the Armor. Written by Ryder Windham and Adam Bray (with a fun foreword from new era STAR WARS star John Boyega), it makes for a superb Christmas present and another worthy entry into the Lucasfilm Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi overall book release banner during the saga's Fortieth Anniversary.

Here's the book blurb:

Just in time for the next blockbuster, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, this unique and beautifully designed compendium with removable features traces one of the franchise’s most iconic characters—the stormtrooper—from initial development through all nine Star Wars movies to their many iterations in TV, comics, videogames, novels, and pop-culture.
Star Wars: A New Hope, the very first instalment in the beloved science-fiction series, introduced the Imperial stormtroopers—the army of the fearsome and tyrannical Galactic Empire. Charged with establishing Imperial authority and suppressing resistance, these terrifying, faceless, well-disciplined soldiers in white have become a universal symbol of oppression.

Star Wars Stormtroopers explores these striking warriors and their evolution in depth for the first time. Ryder Windham and Adam Bray trace the roots of their creation and design, and explore how these elite troops from a galaxy far, far away have been depicted in movies, cartoons, comics, novels, and merchandizing.

OUT NOW IN THE UK: THE CLASSIC TRILOGY AND 'TFA' JUNIOR NOVELS!

Just in time for the 40th Anniversary of George Lucas's inspired opus mythology, with each title blessed with a specific character lightsaber (a lovely nod to one of the early teaser posters to Return of the Jedi), young UK readers can join in the celebratory fun and relive in young novel form, courtesy of EGMONT/DISNEY, the three films that started it all via their Special Edition adapted personas, from that talented literary imagineer and longtime LUCAS BOOKS collaborator Ryder Windham, bringing the stories of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, to blistering, fast paced form, whilst also giving additional perspectives and character oversights to all our main heroes and villains. A pleasing reprint tribute for the continuing book collection.

2015's The Force Awakens junior novel from Michael Kogge, a satisfying telling with additional scenes, also gets a reprinting from EGMONT in this anniversary format, with Kylo Ren's fiery cyberpunk-esque lightsaber gracing that book's cover.

AFICIONADO UPDATE: 'STAR WARS: YEAR BY YEAR - A VISUAL HISTORY' (2016)

Images: DK Books. © &TM 2016 LUCASFILM LTD.

The rise of the female heroine within the STAR WARS universe this past five years has certainly been the most noticeable aspect of the reinvigorated franchise since its inheritance by new Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, especially the creation of all-new sequel character of Jedi-to-be Rey, who captured the hearts and minds of fans so quickly, and the continuing evolution of animation series favourite Ahsoka Tano. Both striking ladies now take well deserved placings between Ralph McQuarrie's classic 1976 Vader Del Rey book cover art for the new edition of STAR WARS: YEAR BY YEAR - A VISUAL HISTORY, out now from DK BOOKS. New characters included, its incredible to see and read about how so much has happened with STAR WARS since 1977, of which this book is a timely reminder of how many generations of fans are more in love with the saga than ever as it approaches its intergalactic 40th Anniversary...

Here's a look back to our original review of the book in its 2010 incarnation, which still stands true to the overall tome: STAR WARS AFICIONADO WEBSITE: STAR WARS: YEAR BY YEAR

Kylo Ren makes his mark as the new sequel baddie, for the book's outside sleeve cover. Grandpa Vader is the back cover star.

As two gorgeous new concept art pieces from THE FORCE AWAKENS- Erik Tiemens and Iain McCaig's concept work for the epic lightsaber duel snow fight, and Doug Chiang's thrilling imagery for the TIE fighter chase of the Millennium Falcon across the Jakku spaceship graveyard - replace the book's previous prints, here's AFICIONADO's pick of the most noteworthy and standout parts of the expanded 2016 edition.

2010: Fans, critics and filmmakers come out to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, alongside the continuing success of the soon more adult and sophisticated THE CLONE WARS animated series.

2011: The launch of the new STAR TOURS ride with even more environments and characters than before, the return of wookiee hero Chewbacca in animated form, and the chart-busting Blu-ray release of the six films (albeit in further enhanced, love 'em or hate 'em Special Editions).

2012. The year STAR WARS made its transition towards The New Era. Image: © & TM 2016 LUCASFILM LTD.

2012: The arrival of the long gestating World War II movie RED TAILS, and the release of EPISODE I in 3D cinemas, giving the Prequel launcher additional staying power inside the all-time box office chart, show that George Lucas is busier than ever. Then comes the surprising news by Summer that he is retiring, and that control of the company is going to the safe and creative hands of Kathleen Kennedy. Following that, fans wonder what will happen next with the STAR WARS universe with the purchase of the company by Disney. As Lucasfilm undergoes intriguing structural changes and creative recruiting, as well as long term strategy formulation, the news is building that new theatrical STAR WARS movies are in the works...

2013: And so begins The New Era, as a huge wave of energy hits Lucasfilm and the STAR WARS franchise, via acclaimed fiction and the launch of new merchandise. THE CLONE WARS is sadly curtailed three seasons short of its planned run with Lucas's retirement, though the news is soon in that Disney has an all-new genre series planned, set between EPISODEs III and IV: STAR WARS REBELS. Meanwhile, fans eagerly await all the news thats fit to print on the upcoming EPISODE VII, excited by the prospect of incoming director J.J. Abrams finally signing up, and teamed alongside Classic Trilogy veteran Lawrence Kasdan, whose work on RETURN OF THE JEDI is also being celebrated within its 30th Anniversary.

2014: Nearly ten years on from the end of EPISODE III, the next untitled chapter of the franchise finally begins filming in April, as the first press call pic featuring its impressive cast, mixing old and new stars with some great new supporting actors, is unveiled worldwide. May sees the announcement of an all-new standalone movie, ROGUE ONE, helmed by Britster Gareth Edwards- when the film's central plot is later revealed at a CELEBRATION convention, fans go deservedly wild at the prospect of finally witnessing the stealing of the infamous Death Star plans. STAR WARS REBELS debuts and immediately makes a positive impression with younger fans, whist older fans see its long-term potential with the eventual return of Darth Vader.

2015: A true blitzkrieg of emotion, joy and wonder, as THE FORCE AWAKENS makes its indelible mark on worldwide cinemas audiences, helped by brilliant marketing, the return of the earlier six films to a new generation via digital HD and streaming, new plans for an ambitious STAR WARS site at Disneyland, and an American CELEBRATION event where fans are rabidly enthusiastic and soon blown away with the film's second trailer. The feeling of "we're home" has never felt stronger to so many. Meanwhile, with the world distracted by AWAKENS fever, the covert heroes of ROGUE ONE begin their equally covert filming in England.

2016: Its a STAR WARS universe bigger and brighter than ever, as fans applaud the majority of the creative decisions made by Kathleen Kennedy and her team in their handling of the old with the new, with ROGUE ONE about to be a wonderful Christmas present, and post production of EPISODE VII a sudden reality.

OUT NOW IN THE UK: 'STAR WARS TREASURY- THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY'

A lovely book that has seemingly not quite gotten the publicity it rightly deserves (not even a mention on the official STARWARS.COM site that I could find!) - presumably due to the merchandise storm build-up that has exploded for other areas linked to THE FORCE AWAKENS - is the newly released in the UK STAR WARS TREASURY, from Egmont Books. A great modern storybook for young readers and Kidults to enjoy, the STAR WARS publishing universe's respected Ryder Windham and the equally celebrated talents of entertainment illustrator Brain Rood have joined forces to present a lovingly crafted adaptation of the first three blockbusting, cinema re-defining STAR WARS movies - From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker - as of their post 1997 Special Edition guises.

Alongside Windham's efficient scene-conveying prose, Rood gets the chances to illustrate the saga's greatest scenes in 120 pieces, adapting/enhancing classic photographic images to artistic form (some of which he improves on), as well as providing his own stunning new works and interpretations of beloved moments in film and pop culture history, the majority of which are used to their best as lavishly-printed full spreads. Standouts for this reviewer are many: STAR WARS (A NEW HOPE) - a lovely shot of Han meeting Jabba and his goons in Docking Bay 94, and the classic chasm swing of Luke and Leia, EMPIRE- Chewbacca's watching out for the Probe Droid on the cold surface of Hoth, the dreaded dinner at Bespin with Vader, and Luke's Falcon rescue, plus JEDI's thrilling speeder bike chase and the Ewoks slugging it out with beleaguered Stormtroopers!

Its a lovely book for fans, especially delightful for younger readers new to the saga who will want to bedtime read catch-up on the heroes of George Lucas's original universe before they see them matured within the all-new galactic action and excitement of THE FORCE AWAKENS. It also makes for a lovely Christmas gift for all ages, currently available online at a good price.

AFICIONADO rating: 3.5 out of 5

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'ULTIMATE STAR WARS'

Know your enemy! Catch up on the villains of the saga in ULTIMATE STAR WARS. Images: DK BOOKS.

ULTIMATE STAR WARS

Compiled by Ryder Windham, Daniel Wallace, Adam Bray and Patricia Carr

Published by DORLING KINDERSLEY

Foreword by Anthony Daniels

Reviewed by Scott Weller

Ever since George Lucas incredible six-film saga came to its then completion in 2005, we’ve had many books large and small with the words “Ultimate” boldly declared in front of them, and many of them ending up being “close but no cigar” in living up to that declaration. Now, DK, already the kings for all-things STAR WARS publishing, for all ages and worldwide tastes, have finally come the closest yet in that mission statement, with this bold and bright, genuinely epic compilation, ton-weighing book- 320 pages of absolute heaven for any fan, and surely the greatest reference for any potential STAR WARS archivist of the officially approved live-action and animated series history.

Heavy enough to rival J. W. Rinzler’s earlier “Making of” books, long–term WARS veterans Daniel Wallace, and Ryder Windham, with the additional support of Patricia Barr and Adam Bray, can be justly proud of their endeavours – surely a year or two in the making. And they’re getting paid to do something they love! How envious can we all be, eh?!

Standout character spreads for Luke, Leia and R2.

Likely initiated as part of a massive and vital canon re-organizational effort from LUCASFILM, controversially shunning the beloved Expanded Universe it had initiated twenty years earlier whilst also getting things ready for the next six new STAR WARS movies ahead (bringing their own unique continuity), all corners of the archives have been thoroughly, exhaustively delved for ULTIMATE STAR WARS (the behind the scenes emailing alone between the compilers and LUCASFILM on content and research likely to have have been the equivalent of twenty times the content of this book!), with each section on characters, creatures, locations, technology, and vehicles presented in pleasing chronological order and properly, often beautifully, showcased. As well as effective character key points and mini-timelines, particularly successful are some wonderful key spreads that evoke the grandeur and beauty of the Light and Dark Sides of the Force, amidst some of the best printing for a DK STAR WARS book yet. A glorious tribute and celebration, of which a thousand-plus classic photographic images are well utilized. Keen photo fans should also watch out for the dozen or so rare or never before seen images additionally included.

As a welcome sideline from the fantasy, the book also has several brief spreads devoted to the vital behind the scenes aspects that would bring the saga and its incredible tapestry to celluloid and digital realisation. Plus a brief but witty foreword from STAR WARS most recognized international ambassador and protocol droid shell inhabitor, Anthony Daniels, reflecting on his often-surreal life in the fantasy juggernaut and its all-consuming aspects.

A class item from the get-go, what with its stylized B/W inside front and back covers and two stunning THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK photo cards, the complex politics, darkness and maneuverings of the Prequel Trilogy, to the gung-ho spirit and energy of the Classic Trilogy are firmly represented, as is the full integrating of THE CLONE WARS animated series (though sadly nothing from the Genndy Tartakovsky era), whose own set of characters and grand scale storytelling have proved just as important and popular as the live-action work, including important entries linked to its recently seen The Lost Missions episodes. Plus the new dawn of heroism and resistance with DISNEY’s first animated series in the universe, STAR WARS REBELS, also highlighted with its opening season, surely delighting the new and growing generational fan base it has rabidly inspired.

Disappointingly, though, there’s no real preview for THE FORCE AWAKENS, except for a few seen-them-all-before behind the scenes images. Would one exclusive sneak peek image inclusion really have spoilt anything?

A richly rewarding immersion into film and space fantasy legend, ULTIMATE STAR WARS is also a timely and necessary reminder of just how talented Lucas and his specially selected behind the scene teams were on the pioneering EPISODEs I-VI, how good the actors were at playing their roles, large or small, and, most importantly, a genuine indicator of how DISNEY really got this incredible and diverse cinematic franchise far cheaper than they should have!

CLASSIC REVIEW: 'BREAKOUT SQUAD - DUEL AT SHATTERED ROCK'

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS - DUEL AT SHATTERED ROCK

A BREAKOUT SQUAD adventure by Ryder Windham

Published in the UK by SUNBIRD books

Reviewed by Scott Weller

Its double duplicity from the evil Dark Lords of the Sith-Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Tyranus-when they hatch and unleash a bold and destructive dose of death and deceit against their turmoil stricken Republic opponents in the evocatively titled DUEL AT SHATTERED ROCK, the next book in author Ryder Windham’s series of THE CLONE WARS: BREAKOUT SQUAD spin-off adventures for SUNBIRD books in the UK .
And it seems the only Jedi who might be able to quash these dark plans is that young Padawan with a mysterious past yet to be revealed: the blue skinned, fiery red eyed alien Nuru Kungurama (a hero who more than makes up for the fact that Grand Admiral Thrawn, another one of his Chiss born species, will later become an absolute monster in the HEIR TO THE EMPIRE saga…), whose motley and diverse crew of Breakout Squad continue to help him on his missions for the Republic far, far out into the galaxy-including his loyal four man commando squad of Clone Troopers, trusty lady space pilot Lalo Gunn (and her ship, the Hasty Harpy) and the adapted Separatist commando droid, Cleaver.
On the planet Vaced for a rendezvous with the important representative of the Kynachi peoples- Langu Sommiar- about to signify his planets vital association with the Republic, Nuru is unaware that Dooku has dispatched a top assassin from the Mandalorian Death Watch, Hudo Shiv, to stop it at all costs. And if he succeeds in his attempt, it will send the Republic into further shock waves of distress and chaos, especially within the already fractured Galactic Senate…

As the enjoyable plot strands continue to brew further across the series, our heroes still have a spy and saboteur within Breakout Squad to be revealed and dealt with, plus the return of the green skinned, armoured Separatist baddie, Overseer Umbrag, who escaped their grasp at the end of the previous novel. And the danger continues on a more personal level for Nuru, as his prior captured Jedi Master, Ring-Sol Ambase, is being manipulated by Dooku into a carefully controlled situation in the hopes that he we will turn against his Padawan.

The adventures of Nuru, the young Padawan, out in the most hostile and treacherous quarters of the galaxy, away from the protection of his Jedi comrades, works well as a book series and author Windham works hard in capturing the early to mid-age readerships with his teen lead creation, born in the best traditions of the early heroism of Anakin Skywalker and his son, Luke, with whom we can identify and share in their epic and often dangerous journeys. Also in the best STAR WARS tradition, the bold fantasy spirit will surely become tragically darker with ongoing books, what with Nuru’s origins/Chiss birthright yet to be revealed, and obviously its ultimate revelations being something that the Sith plan to use for their own purposes against the Republic and his Jedi masters (tapping his Dark Side potential, a la Anakin Skywalker?).

As has been the case with Lucas opus, and its subsequent spin-offs, where would the adventures be without many new interesting and diverse creatures and peoples to both help and hinder our heroes, as Windham introduces a new, giant sized alien named Grizz- a bulky criminal and talented swoop rider with an always hungry stomach- to help Nuru and his team out. I look forward to seeing how this character develops in the ongoing story.

There’s also further strong use of iconic STAR WARS Prequel universe characters (look out for some fun cameos from lethal assassin with the hair aversion, Asajj Ventress, and the duplicitous Durosian, old red eyes himself, Cad Bane, who kicks the book off with a an action packed start by confronting the latest slimy member of the Hutt clan: Drixo), and it’s all highly readable fun, zipping along at an enthusiastic pace perfect for young STAR WARS fans/readers. There’s also some much welcome unexpected twists and surprises in the last section of the book which should keep readers guessing about what will happen with the next adventure.

Above all, though, the climactic duel of the title, between Mandalorian and Nuru, is certainly the books highlight section and credit to the artist Wayne Lo for his great cover painting depicting this key sequence. One little glitch: a continuity problem arises from the return of Death Watch- it states that EPISODE II’s Jango Fett was a Mandalorian Warrior, but this is something that has been contradicted and shot down by THE CLONE WARS animated series, which, in the episode THE MANDALORE PLOT (regarded as official story cannon by Lucas himself), states that Jango was not from Mandalore and that his armour was acquired through unknown means. With the Expanded Universe and THE CLONE WARS at occasional friendly odds over the origins of certain characters, this is surely an accidental slip-up that managed to get through the publishing cracks.
Overall, DUEL AT SHATTERED ROCK is a book that’s highly accessible and a good immersion into the Prequel universe at the same time. With his fine ability to write enjoyable, well-plotted and fast paced adventure stories for the younger audiences, I’m surprised Mister Windham hasn’t been asked yet to contribute ideas for THE CLONE WARS series. Perhaps they will…

CLASSIC REVIEW: 'STAR WARS BLUEPRINTS - REBEL EDITION'

STAR WARS BLUEPRINTS: REBEL EDITION

Written by Ryder Windham

Illustrated by Chris Trevas and Chris Reiff

Published by DORLING KINDERSLEY books

Reviewed by Scott Weller

When the original, all defining space fantasy STAR WARS first came out in 1977 and spread its wings of popularity and imagination across the world, which boys and dads didn’t want to dream of the chance to be in an X-wing fighter and go off into both adventure and battle alongside Jedi-to-be Luke Skywalker and the brave men and women of Red Squadron. Just seeing that end scene in the film- pretty much 15 minutes of wall to wall dramatic space battle conflict the likes of which had never been seen before cinematically, and initiating similar scenes in sci-fi movies following in the films mighty wake, which really were just pale imitations- was pretty staggering, and you felt like you were in the middle of it all- almost like being in a real roller coaster ride at Disney. Alongside these soon to be legendary attack craft were the Rebel Y-wing fighters, equally intriguing to look at from a design directive and just as fast as their rival ships-both were the most sleek looking spaceship craft ever built yet, and it was their grubbiness, the looks of decay and wear and tear on them, the pitted scars and the oil leak mark on their hull that made them seem further realistic and even more visually attractive- the first time a science fiction/fantasy universe had had that intriguing quality, the lived in look, and the ships, alongside the films other technology and environments, proved relatable in the same way that the legendary British Spitfires were to us all in images and footage from World War II, or seen for real at air shows. I’ve always loved fighter craft and planes in general-though I’d be too terrified to pilot one. There would be one exception, though, and that would be within the STAR WARS universe-where I’d be a crack pilot capable of handling anything, and especially an X-wing fighter! Yep, I reckon that if I lived within George Lucas’s incredible STAR WARS universe I’d give one of those babies a try, and especially now that I have the incredible schematics and details of not just this ship, but others being used within the Rebel Alliance, plus related technology, in the new, second book batch of superb blueprints from DORLING KINDERSLEY. Like the superb previous ULTIMATE EDITION, the two Chris’s -Trevas and Reiff- return to add their distinctive graphic works to the mix, alongside the skilled STAR WARS history compiling talents of Ryder Windham. This new book, with their combined multi-media talents, tell us everything we’ll ever need to now about the formidable Rebel Alliance and the not new, but souped up to their best abilities technology they would use, against all odds and despite their beaten down conditions, piloted/used by brave men, women and aliens, to defy a galaxy spanning, totally overwhelming force of Imperial Tyranny.
The skillfully designed schematics are, as before, excellent, and Windham’s notes are all encompassing in their detail within the ever expanding framework of the STAR WARS Expanded Universe. You’ll find out where these ships come from (in a now official history that, since the nineties and the Prequels, has always been different and adjusted to how I originally read them from when STAR WARS was released, especially with the X-wings (I always recall reading that the X-wings, and not just the Y-wings, were old types of fighter from before the Empire (long before EPISODE III’s introduction of the similar looking ARC-170 fighters), yet now the X-wings had been specially made for use with the birth of the Rebel Alliance). Why and who made these changes I don’t know, but I’m guessing it was indeed the early nineties that the revisionism happened and LUCASFILM have stayed with it), how they work (in which readers can finally discover where everything is inside them and all their vital functions), and their defining battles within the saga, past and present, with further info on some of the bold star warriors that have used them. And it doesn’t just stop with the fighters, we also get the same insider depth with the wonderful Rebel Blockade Runner from STAR WARS (the first vehicle and technology seen in the original 1977 film) and REVENGE OF THE SITH, the heavy weaponry used by our heroes (including Chewbacca the Wookiee’s distinctive Bowcaster and crack shot Princess Leia’s retro cool-looking defender blaster), and, in a special treat for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK fans, complete schematics of every facet of the incredible Echo Base facility on the fifth planet in the Hoth system, where Luke, Han and the others took refuge-find out where the command center and medical areas are that played viotal parts in the film’s early beginning, alongside areas of the base we never saw, and find the correct locations of the Millennium Falcon smuggling vessel, fighters, transport ships and Snowspeeders in the various hangar levels (which, I’m assuming took a lot of work and planning, bravely tries to explain all the differing visual continuity changes with the vehicles seen in the film’s Hangar bay scenes), and discover more about the intriguing, powerful defense systems and devices used to protect them from what will eventually be overwhelming Imperial attacks both from above and on the ground.
With such excellent notes and superb technical details/layouts which are pleasing to eye, their printing up as high quality large scales posters is a terrific bonus, and they make you want to delve into them constantly for lots of close-up examination, as well as proving very durable as wall hang ups. There’s also some very nice rare photos that I hadn’t seen before accompanying the text (including a deleted scene – perhaps in recognition of the upcoming Blu-ray release of EMPIRE), which will be of note to archivists like me.
As with the prior ULTIMATE EDITION, you’re guaranteed to be looking at this 32 page book and blueprints for hours, enjoying the high dedication to detail that these STAR WARS projects have initiated (where you’ll also re-admire the beautiful work done for the films in 1979, 1982 and 2003 by Lucas’s very talented art teams). We look forward to further exciting volumes in the continuing series, though I think the Classic Trilogy is the area that should be examined the most-its more iconic and intriguingly accessible design wise.
AFICIONADO RATING: With such unparalleled research and access to the craft and other visual materials from LUCASFILM,  great care, attention to detail and love of the project can be seen within this new blueprints edition. Another smashing book that’s a worthy addition to the collection, and a further STAR WARS project that breathes new life into an old idea. Now, the only things missing from our lives now are the fully function technology and vehicles themselves! 9 out of 10
