ROGUE ONE: THE OTHER 'RESIDENTS' OF JEDHA!

A teeming city of various alien races and a diversity of droid servants, the religious culture world of Jedha certainly attracts a wide variety of travellers, as seen in this great behind the scenes shot from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

ROGUE ONE: UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF THE ORIGINAL GARETH EDWARDS VISION!

Darth Vader (likely Spencer Wilding) monitors a planet (presumably Scarif) in a deleted scene set on the Death Star, from the original version of Rogue One. A special image released by Hal Hickel/ ILM.

Like a mystery wrapped in an enigma, the original filmed version of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Brit talent Gareth Edwards, will surely never be released as a historical separate cut in any kind of format, nor is it likely that we ever see any of its many, many deleted/alternate scenes (as was the case with the later revamped film's 2017 home media release and its frustrating lack of major special features content). At least not with the franchise under the ownership of Disney for the foreseeable future. And very little about the first cut, post 2017, has been talked about by cast and crew, either- most likely afraid of breaching Disney's strict, harsh-action-will-be-taken-if-leaked Non Disclosure Agreement contracts.

Thankfully, over the years, lots of information and photos from this intriguing original version of Rogue have filtered through magazines, merchandise and online, however, and Star Wars Aficionado has managed to piece together as much as we can on about that intriguing work and footage originally filmed for the hugely popular first 'Anthology' movie that has now disappeared into Star Wars behind the scenes lore and consigned to posthumous 'What if? thoughts by excited fans. Deleted but abandoned moments of scene-setting, action and character (plus further referencing to the original Star Wars of 1977) that look just as exciting and memorable as any seen with the final version of the movie, as well as any subsequent modern film in the saga under Disney's ownership and creative control...

ROGUE ONE: THE TENSION RISING...

Now arrived into Jedha's primary city, the huge and menacing presence of the Empire, as well as its brutal occupational skillset, is more keenly felt than ever by a wary Jyn Erso and her escort Cassian Andor, in a tension-building scene from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

As the new season of Andor approaches in 2024, could Jyn Erso potentially make a cameo appearance in the series timeline?

OUT NOW IN HARDBACK: 'THE HIGH REPUBLIC - THE BATTLE OF JEDHA'

First introduced in Rogue One - A Star Wars Story, the fabled planet of Jedha was shown to us onscreen as a wrecked, troubled world of diverse chaos and dissident action, whose holy temples were continually ransacked and its natural resources mined by the evil and tyrannical Empire for use against the galaxy. Now, with the latest adventure in the all-new world popular The High Republic multi-media event series, we go back in time to discover the once spiritually enlightened world as it was before the dark times were prevalent, when many of its people, and other pilgrims, worshipped the Jedi and their spirit of Force goodness working to benefit peoples across the galaxy, in an all-new adventure script from George Mann - The Battle of Jedha, available now in the UK from Century Publishing.

The official release info:

After the events of The High Republic: Convergence, the Jedi travel to Jedha in this full script for the Star Wars audio original The Battle of Jedha.

Jedha, The worn streets of this ancient world serve as a confluence for the galaxy. Visited by all, yet owned by none. Here, the Jedi are but one creed among many worshipping and studying the Force. From the Guardians of the Whills to the Path of the Open Hand, countless beings come to learn, and to share, in peace.

As all of Jedha prepares for its Festival of Balance, the galaxy still reels from the violence on Eiram and E'ronoh. But after foiling a plot to escalate the war between the two planets, the Jedi believe that a lasting peace may be within reach. Master Creighton Sun and Jedi Knight Aida Forte arrive on Jedha with delegations from both planets to formally end the 'Forever War." The Jedi hope that the harmony of Jedha's many factions, along with the signing of a peace treaty, will create a symbol to the rest of the galaxy of what can be accomplished through unity.

But not all are happy with the Jedi's involvement or ready to concern themselves with peace. Rumours begin to swirl that the Jedi bring war in their wake. The distrust and anger that for for so long fuelled he Forever War now threaten to corrupt the communities of Jedha. When violence breaks out on the sacred moon, the war that was meant to end on Jedha may soon engulf the entire world .

ROGUE ONE: STORMTROOPERS? WHAT STORMTROOPERS?

A Jedi he is not. Nonetheless, Jedha city's protectorate Chirrut Imwe uses all the natural abilities available to him in proving himself a lethal combatant against a squad of arrogant and soon out of their fighting depth Imperial Stormtroopers in one of the highlight physical conflict scenes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

ROGUE ONE: IN THE DOMAIN OF SAW GERRERA! (DELETED SCENES)

'Escorted' by his unique band of Rebel soldiers fighting for his cause on Jedha (and part of the 'Cavern Angels' squadron), Jyn Erso and her new friends are taken to the lair of the enigmatic and dangerous Saw Gerrera, an isolated but nonetheless powerful force of violence and retribution against the Empire. Early conceptual art ideas saw the group make their way via the catacombs of Jedha, where dark tunnels were chillingly filled with hundreds of ancient, eerie skulls.

Conceptual art clearly envisaging Forest Whitaker as the enigmatic and aggressive Saw Gerrera.

In the originally filmed version of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Saw Gerrera was still the bald, flight suit/armour wearing figure originally seen in communication with Galen and Lyra Erso years before on Lah'mu. Saw's talk with the grown-up Jyn on Jedha had him concerned at her future well being with the other side of the Rebel cause and her potential survival. The early teaser trailer has some of that concerned and angry dialogue ('What will you do when they catch you?', 'What will they do if they break you?', and 'If you continue to fight, what will you become?'). With his deteriorating medical condition, several deleted scenes would see him talking whilst sitting in an old starship flight chair turned into a medical monitoring device, a moment from that can be briefly seen in the first teaser trailer of 2016. By the time of the film's infamous reshoots by April 2016, the character of Saw had visually, physically changed to reflect an older, even more severely ill figure. His death scene was filmed twice, firstly outside the caverns as he helps Jyn escape the Jedha catastrophe, then reshot with him inside his chamber, ready to embrace the onrush of death.

Saw in his medically reconditioned flight chair.

Mentioned in the official Rogue One sticker encyclopedia, Saw Gerrera had a 'secret mission' to accomplish whilst on Jedha - presumably linked to the uncovering of the Death Star with the finished movie but also altered once the character of defector Bodhi Rook was changed and expanded with the reshoots - Gerrera's plot element linked to the discovery of the Death Star was later developed within the Star Wars Rebels animated series, of which he made several special episode appearances, the character also voiced by Forest Whitaker.

A 2-1B medical droid would be constantly at Saw's side monitoring his ever-deteriorating conditions. The sequence was deleted from the movie as reshoots saw the character of Gerrera change.

ROGUE ONE: ON IMPERIAL STREETS!

The continued subjugation of Jedha by the Empire and its legions against what was once a peaceful and prosperous celebration of the Force and the Jedi Order is a brewing powder keg for violence, as seen in this great shot from one of the early trailers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

ROGUE ONE: WAR CHILD!

Caught in the street battle between Saw Gerrera's rebels and the Imperial Stormtroopers, a young Jedha child, Pendra Siliu, looks set to be their next innocent casualty. Thankfully, quickly seeing her plight, and having previously offered Pendra food in a deleted scene, Jyn Erso, a fellow orphan herself, comes to the rescue in spectacular fashion, during early events in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story...

A deleted moment from one of the film's teaser trailer shows Siliu, amongst other members of the street crowd looking upwards- whether this was a moment leading up to the street battle (likely), or linked to Jedha's destruction from the Death Star above them, is unknown...

A filmed but deleted scene where Jyn meets Pendra.

ROGUE ONE: THE UNLIKELY DEFECTOR!

Won over by Galen Erso to defect from the Empire and join the Rebel cause, Bodhi Rook travels back to Jedha, risking his neck to find Saw Gerrera's gorilla forces hiding in the desert, in an introductory scene for the character filmed as part of re-shoots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Note the photo blow-up background of some of the Jordan location on the Pinewood set, disguised from view by clever use of lighting and hand-held camera work.

ROGUE ONE: ASSAULT ON THE HOLY LAND!

The once free planet of Jedha- a celebration of the Jedi Order and the nature of the Force- now enslaved by the Empire, the tendrils of one of its skies dominant Star Destroyer's reaching down deep into the holiest of its once cities and populace, in this great concept art of doom-laden oppression for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, by Andre Wallin.

ROGUE ONE: A STONE REMINDER...

Purged by the Empire they may have been, but the legacy of the Jedi and their use of the Force remains potent on the far-off world of Jedha, via the immense wrecked statues (this one suspiciously looking like Sir Alec Guinness - perhaps a deliberate visual tribute to the actor) dedicated to their work protecting the galaxy, as seen in this great imagery from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This shot would replace an aerial image of the statue seen in an earlier trailer for the film, linked to the arrival of Jyn and Cassian on the planet.

ROGUE ONE: WHAT STORMTROOPERS?

The Jedi are extinct but their spiritual guidance and 'fire' through others lives on in the ravaged city world of Jedha, most notably via the non-Force sensitive and former guardian Chirrut Imwe, whose talents for perception and physical agility prove themselves formidable to any Imperial threats, as seen in this great art for Rogue One by Dan Mumford.

ROGUE ONE: ON LONG PATROL!

On one of the rocky desert outcrops of the planet Jedha, a lone Imperial Sandtrooper keys an eye on the horizon and a look out for any hidden Rebel fighters, in this deleted scene moment shot early on during location filming for Rogue One - A Star Wars Story.

Concept art of the Jedha Camel creature.

In the original version of Rogue One, Stormtroopers were to be seen riding long-legged camel aliens, indigenous creatures of the planet. It was a sequence concept designed and the troopers were filmed on location for later digital insertion of the beasts, but the sequence was ultimately cut.

Images of the creatures and their mounts would also appear in the STAR WARS Galactic Atlas book that came out with the cinema release.

Unused live action filming with rough concept art overlay by Matt Allsopp.

ROGUE ONE: REVOLUTION'S END?

Outside his hidden base in the Jedha wilderness, Jyn Erso confers with a seemingly stand-off-ish Saw Gerrera in a scene later abandoned, and when Forest Whitaker's character originally had a bald head throughout. Presumably, this scene, captured here in rehearsal, was linked to Saw's original demise (perhaps Jyn was trying to convince him to join her team) and filmed at Pinewood Studios.

ROGUE ONE: ON THE PILGRIM TRAIL...

Newly arrived on Jedha, Jyn and Cassian mix with a small party of religious pilgrims heading towards the city, in location footage shot in Jordan ultimately not used, though some behind the scenes filming of it did make its way to the recent Rogue One Blu-ray release extras.

OUT NOW IN THE UK: 'STAR WARS: GUARDIANS OF THE WHILLS'

Chirrut and Baze- together again. Art by Diogo Saito.

Spiritual and battle hardened defenders of the faith and the mysterious Force to the end, exiled former Guardians of the Whills Chirrut Imwe and Baze Malbus played a key and memorable role in the Rebel Alliance's ultimate success at the Battle of Scarif- their noble sacrifice saving the lives of billions against galactic tyranny and earning them instant and well deserved cult status with worldwide fans of the STAR WARS cinematic universe and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Now, relive some of their earlier previously unrevealed adventures in the Holy City of Jedha, at a time no less crucial and enlightening in their lives, of which their abilities and long-time friendship forged in courage and adaptability against evil shines through anew: Star Wars: Guardians of the Whills, out now in UK paperback from Egmont, written by Greg Rucka, and featuring terrific cover and inside B/W spread art scenes by Diogo Saito.

Their former status as Guardians may now have been denied them, but their dedication to the protection of Jedha's innocent people, especially the orphans whose lives have been torn apart by building Imperial occupation, remains undiminished. The arrival of steadfast and boldly brutal Saw Gerrera and his extemeist Rebel band, to whom the duo will add their allegiance from time to time, intensifies the situation still further as the bridging to Rogue One begins (we even find out the story of that street-crashed black and white X-wing fighter- a nice touch!). Author Rucka weaves a pleasing tale full of action that truly captures the personalities of the two quirky cinematic heroes: the spiritually enlightened and ready for action Chirrut, and the loyalty of his lovably gruff, stormtrooper killing friend/comrade-in-arms that is the long suffering Baze Malbus.

ROGUE ONE: CAPTURED!

Nowhere to run for Cassian?

In the originally filmed conclusion to the street battle in Jedha, Cassian and Jyn were cornered by Stormtroopers, leading into the action debut of Chirrut Imwe. In 2016, the scene was re-jigged and had new scenes shot, including the pair with K-2SO trying his "prisoner and escort" trick later filmed in 2016. K-2 was present in part of the abandoned street scenes footage, too, when the human duo were posing as pilgrims.

Stunt Coordinator Rob Inch goes through the action scene with Diego Luna.

In a moment from one of the early trailers, Jyn and Cassian are handcuffed.

Jyn gets to wield her retracting baton on some Stormtroopers.

Wearing a back pack camouflage to blend in with the extras if accidently caught on camera, Gareth Edwards goes through a scene with the actors on the Pinewood set.

ROGUE ONE: BEWARE THE PROBE DROID!

When navigating the Imperial patrolled streets of the once hallowed Jedha, our Rebel heroes Jyn and Cassian, disguised as pilgrims, must be careful of everyone... and everything, like this fun little probe droid cameo!

ROGUE ONE: EXTREME EXTREMISTS!

Their latest brutal mission to liberate stolen Kyber Crystals from Imperial forces achieved, Saw Gerrera's not-so-motley band of human/alien resistance fighters turn their attentions to Jyn and Cassian, in this scene on Jedha, from ROGUE ONE.

ROGUE ONE: IN K-2SO WE TRUST?!

He may blend in with his former Imperial masters, but K-2SO's improvisational skills leave a lot to be desired when he, Cassian and Jyn are stopped by Stormtroopers in this scene in Jedha, from ROGUE ONE. The moment where K hits Cassian was apparently improvised by Alan Tudyk and certainly got a great response from audiences.
