CLASSIC ART: WELCOME TO STARKILLER BASE!

It's an arrival on the harsh environment locale of the enemy Starkiller Base world that Han Solo and his Resistance comrades will never forget, as they depart the crash-landed Millennium Falcon in search of a safe and hopefully unnoticed entrance to the immense facility so as to rescue the recently captured Rey.

A great piece of conceptual art for The Force Awakens by the ever-inspiring Doug Chiang.

CLASSIC ART: THOSE ENDURING ICONS!

The true heart of the entire Star Wars saga that will never be diminished - Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa may be older but are never less than heroic, dedicated to keeping peace in the galaxy many years after their battle against the Empire at Endor. Lovely art by Xavier Thomas for the Brazilian exclusive cover edition of Troy Denning's Crucible, the retirement of the Skywalker saga in the original version of the Expanded Universe, prior to 2014's Disney takeover.

THE CLONE WARS: TYRANUS REVEALED!

The mystery of Sifo Dyas and the creation of the Clone Army via the Kaminoans has now partially been revealed, alongside the identity of the elusive 'Tyranus', as our Jedi heroes Anakin and Obi-Wan face off once more against the nefarious evil of Count Dooku on the Pike Syndicate controlled world of Oba Diah. A classic lightsaber conflict finale scene from the superb The Clone Wars Season Six episode, The Lost One.

THE CLONE WARS: STRINGS PULLED!

With Darth Maul covertly ruling the troubled, feuding world of Mandalore, it is puppet 'leader' Almac who channels his commands to the people, as seen here during the closing scenes of the game-changing The Clone Wars Season Five episode, Shades of Reason. The fallout from the Mandalore legacy will continue with the new series episodes coming at the end of the year.

'STAR WARS REBELS': 'THE GHOST' OF 'GALACTICA'?

As the main focal point of the first season and beyond, life for the people of the planet Lothal is not so good under the thumb of the Empire. So thank the Force that the heroes of Star Wars Rebels are around to help out, breaking the Imperial-controlled space lanes to help where possible via their nimble vessel, The Ghost, as seen in this lovely production painting art for the series by Andre Kirk.

A similar design to The Ghost from 1978's Battlestar Galactica. Image: Universal.

I always thought that The Ghost looked familiar, however, before its Rebels debut. And then I remembered the works of Joe Johnston and Ralph McQuarrie in designing vehicles not just for Star Wars but also the original 1978/79 version of Battlestar Galactica. Sure enough, a similar ship design appears on a technical schematic during the opening episode, Saga of a Star World. It may also have been a prior design idea, perhaps, for the Millennium Falcon back in late 1975, before it became the familiar 'flying hamburger' we know and love.

If anyone has any more info on this, please get in touch...

EPISODE VII: THE NEW BASE...

There's nothing that sums up a STAR WARS film more evocatively than seeing X-wing fighters and the Millennium Falcon together at a Rebel/Resistance base, and this great art for The Force Awakens, from conceptual spark Matt Allsopp (firmly capturing the spirit of Ralph McQuarrie), intriguingly puts them on a mysterious planet (later to become D'Qar) where the vegetation has taken a firm hold of the local ancient architecture- an idea that subtly made its way into the finished film.

CLASSIC ART: THE TIE's THEY ARE-A-CHANGING!

On an unknown Imperial world, a new design of TIE fighter, with unique foldable wings on landing, is ready to assist others from a previous incarnation, in this terrific concept art idea by Doug Chiang, from a time when The Force Awakens was still in its early genesis and everything was up for grabs to inspire the upcoming storytelling.

One of Chiang's memorable newTIE designs would eventually make it into the saga's past, within the Classic Trilogy universe of Rogue One.

CLASSIC ART: INSIDE THE HANGAR BAY

A superb and detailed look at one of the hangar bays inside the First Order's Star Destroyer Finalizer, packed with TIE craft, soldiers and armament, as concept art realized for The Force Awakens circa 2013/14. Stellar work from James Clyne.

THE CLONE WARS: SITH SWORDPLAY!

As civil war erupts across the Mandalorian city homeworld, an even worse battle is taking place deep below it, as Savage Opress locks horns (forgive the pun) and lightsabers against the fearsome power of that old Sith devil himself, Darth Sidious, in a classic moment from the genuinely epic duel closing the powerful and acclaimed THE CLONE WARS Season Five episode, The Lawless.

CLASSIC ART: UNSTOPPABLE JEDI!

The assassination attempt on their lives thwarted, Jedi "Ambassadors" Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi plough their way through numerous Battle Droids and head to the Trade Federation command vessel's bridge for answers, in this great art from an online STAR WARS JOURNEYS EPISODE I storybook of a few years back. If anyone knows the artist (Brian Rood?), please get in touch.

THE CLONE WARS: THE HIDDEN ENEMY

On Kamino, Master Shaak Ti confers with alien leader Lama Su on the emerging problem linked to Clone Trooper Tup's unexpected, murderous slaying of a Jedi Knight. Is this a one-off occurence, or a systematic start in the breakdown of the psychological welfare of the Clone Trooper battalions- a situation that could threaten the lives of their war comrades? A scene from THE CLONE WARS: THE LOST MISSIONS episode Conspiracy.

UK fans will finally be able to see this last batch of episodes on SKY from sometime later in the year.

THE CLONE WARS: AHSOKA AND THE WOLF!

Dave Filoni once again combines his passions for Wolves and his co-creation (with Lucas) of the heroic young Jedi character of Ahsoka Tano, with a droid or two sprinkled around for extra effect, for this super piece of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS autograph art from the second CELEBRATION EUROPE of a couple of years back.

Recent news reports Stateside are pretty much confirming that Ahsoka will be returning to the animated STAR WARS universe with the second season of REBELS, arriving on the UK's DISNEY XD CHANNEL in a new regular Saturdays 9am time slot, from February 21st. Will she be revealed as the mysterious Rebel sympathiser codenamed Fulcrum?

Other STAR WARS character luminaries returning in key guest star episodes include the return of Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), Governor Tarkin (Stephen Stanton), Yoda (Frank Oz), and at least one more appearance from Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) in the not too distant future, and, in rumours that are gaining some weight, a certain Corellian space smuggler...

Back on UK TV from February 21st, 2015.

BEHIND THE SCENES: GOOD-HUMOURED SMUGGLER!

Trying to film a dramatic moment for our heroes, Harrison Ford instead gets to enjoy a laugh within the Millennium Falcon cockpit-one of the 1976 bloopers from the original STAR WARS filming, seen in the 2004 documentary: EMPIRE OF DREAMS, with further revealed Solo hilarity unearthed in a rare and recently gag-reel, available within the electronic marvel that is THE MAKING OF STAR WARS revised e-book, here: The Making of Star Wars (Enhanced Edition) eBook: J. W. Rinzler, Peter Jackson: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store

Jump forward thirty-eight years, and here's hoping that Harrison Ford manages to raise a behind the scenes laugh or two anew in the Falcon cockpit, for EPISODE VII.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: 'RAZOR'S EDGE' NOVEL

STAR WARS: EMPIRE AND REBELLION

BOOK ONE: RAZOR'S EDGE

By Martha Wells

Published in UK hardback by CENTURY PUBLISHING

Reviewed by Scott Weller

Having ultimately found the long-running post ROTJ era FATE OF THE JEDI series only partially successful in its storytelling aims, the news from LUCAS BOOKS that they were going back to the youthful incarnations of our Classic Trilogy heroes for a new series of books set within the incident packed time lines of EPISODEs IV and V personally proved a welcome sign, as did the revelation that they would also be penned by experienced yet also bright new stars to the publishing dominion- a further decision that certainly restored my faith in the next phase of our heroes literary development. In the coming months, the soon umbrella titled EMPIRE and REBELLION piqued my interest further, especially the announcement that each book in this new trilogy would separately focus on one of the core iconic triad, likely cementing the kind of developing uprising against the Empire soon to be explored in Disney's REBELS animated TV series. The sterling choice of Leia to launch the book series - her story of princess to rebel leader, whose mission to retrieve the Death Star plans ended in such tragedy: witnessing her planet and peoples destruction and the after effects it wrings to her psyche- surely proving a continued rich area for characterisation mining. Martha Wells debut in the Lucas playground certainly captures the spunky and authoritative pre EMPIRE heroine with Razor's Edge, as well as her sparky, sometimes snippy relationship with soon lover Han Solo. The idea of the toughened up Princess also being caught up in the affairs of desperate Alderaanian refuges, who have had to become space pirates in order to survive a changing universe, certainly proves intriguing, bringing with it the necessary moral and ethical dilemmas for Leia to navigate and resolve, alongside her resurfaced guilt association at being a part of the rebellion that ultimately led to their worlds destruction...

Unfortunately, despite a solid beginning, and a fine writing style perfect for STAR WARS books, the overall story, also involving a cruel female pirate flightmaster and some relatively small-scale Imperial pursuit, failed to fully engage me, having a tangible air of same old, same old about it. Lots of new female characters, perhaps more here than the entire output of the Classic Trilogy movies, are welcome but mostly prove forgettable, failing to hold a candle to Lucas's core icons- a continuing problem for LUCAS BOOKS and its authorship chain. The plotline of an emotion besieged Leia caught in tumultuous and dangerous situations with Alderaan survivors was also ultimately done better, and in shorter page length, within one of the early books of the SCHOLASTIC junior adult REBEL FORCE adventures of a few years back.

Here's hoping that the next two soon arriving tales within the EMPIRE and REBELLION series improve on this moderately enjoyable starter (greater imaginative ambitions please!), and that Miss Wells potential as a STAR WARS writer is given a chance to shine brighter with a more original tale in the not too distant future...

AFICIONADO RATING: 6 out of 10

EPISODE VII: WHERE ARE OUR ORIGINAL HEROES?

Since March this year, there have been rumours that the original Classic Trilogy gang of three- Rebel Alliance and New Republic heroes Mark Hamill as General Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa, and Harrison Ford as General Han Solo- would be returning for the brand new opening chapter of the next STAR WARS Trilogy, helmed by writer/director J.J. Abrams.

Since then, speculation of the trio's possible return has been praised and endlessly talked about/debated by fans and entertainment news specialists and critics around the world. But now, as we reach the end of 2013, there has frustratingly still been no official confirmation of their appearances in this all-important first film: EPISODE VII. Official confirmation of their return would have been a lovely Christmas present and end to the year, but, with the official STARWARS.COM website now on holiday, it was not to be. Here's hoping that an announcement comes early into 2014 and as soon as possible- that our beloved heroes will indeed be back in action to challenge old and new threats to their newly established Republic. After so much build up and publicity- LUCASFILM, currently and effectively using these rumours to their own benefit in order to re-energise their press machine- let's indeed hope that they are coming back, otherwise what should be a bold and bright 2014 will get off to a helluva disappointing start for millions of fans...

Fingers crossed...

A PRINCESS IN DANGER. 'RAZOR'S EDGE' - OUT NOW IN UK HARDBACK

The eagerly anticipated EMPIRE AND REBELLION book trilogy begins in the UK this month with CENTURY's hardback release of the Princess Leia adventure Razor's Edge, by Martha Wells.

Here's the cover blurb:

Times are desperate for the Rebel Alliance. Harassment by the Empire and a shortage of vital supplies are hindering completion of a new secret base on the ice planet Hoth. So when Mid Rim merchants offer much-needed materials for sale, Princess Leia Organa and Han Solo lead an Alliance delegation to negotiate a deal.

But when treachery forces the rebel ship to flee into territory controlled by pirates, Leia makes a shocking discovery: the fierce marauders come from Leia’s homeworld of Alderaan, recently destroyed by the Death Star. These refugees have turned to pillaging and plundering to survive—and they are in debt to a pirate armada, which will gladly ransom the princess to the vengeful Empire . . . if they find out her true identity.

Struggling with intense feelings of guilt, loyalty, and betrayal, Leia is determined to help her wayward kinspeople, even as Imperial forces are closing in on her own crippled ship. Trapped between lethal cutthroats and brutal oppressors, Leia and Han, along with Luke, Chewbacca, and a battle-ready crew, must defy death—or embrace it—to keep the rebellion alive.

BACK TO THE USUAL SUSPECTS WITH 'SCOUNDRELS' - OUT NOW IN UK PAPERBACK

Fortune and glory are normally recognisable within Indiana Jones's memorable psyche, but they've also been present in a certain adventurer from that other universe of STAR WARS, too: that beloved and crafty Corellian space smuggler Han Solo, who showcases his talents against some dangerous galactic criminals in Timothy Zahn's warmly regarded heist adventure, also featuring Lando Calrissian: Scoundrels, out now in UK paperback from ARROW BOOKS, which also featuring a special bonus: a prequel novella to the story from the author, Winner Takes All.

GOODBYE, LYNNE HAZELDEN...

The very sad news has come in that RETURN OF THE JEDI background artist Lynne Hazelden has sadly passed away, after being such a trooper battling cancer. Lynne was one of the few onscreen and visible female X-wing pilots of the film, later given the Expanded Universe character name of Karie Neth. She can be viewed in the important Rebel Briefing Room scene.

I had the opportunity of meeting Miss Hazelden a few years back- an attractive and charming lady who had lots to remember about her time making JEDI, as well as other films in her varied career.

Our deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends at this sad time. RIP.

Lynne amongst the other X-wing pilots from RETURN OF THE JEDI.

With thanks to Chris Baker for the information.

CLASSIC IMAGE: PRINCESS IN DETENTION!

Even locked up in a dirty, isolated cell on the Death Star, Princess Leia still has that regal air of beauty and gutsy Rebellion about her, in this classic image from the original STAR WARS.

Titled Razor's Edge, its the first part of the new EMPIRE and REBELLION book trilogy, comprising all new authors to the expanded universe- this one being written by Martha Wells.
