CLASSIC IMAGE: CELEBRATING THE SUPPORTING STARS OF 'STAR WARS'!
They'd been quietly ignored when the original film was in its stratospheric release into cinemas the first few months of Summer 1977- early FOX publicity indicated that Threepio and Artoo were both robots, and that they didn't have human operators in Anthony Daniels or Kenny Baker, whilst early stills photographs failed to credit Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca or Dave Prowse as Darth Vader. Thankfully, by the time of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, this situation for the Classic Trilogy's all-important supporting cast was mostly rectified happily (as seen in the above publicity image), especially for Anthony Daniels, who received a bigger credit for his role from the first sequel onwards.
