Fritz Lang's visionary robot female Maria of the B/W early cinema masterpiece Metropolis had been the original inspiration for what would become the golden droid hero/servant of the original Star Wars saga, but conceptual artist Ralph McQuarrie would imbue Threepio's early design origins with a relatable and friendly visual charm that would be refined onscreen and go on to appeal to fans for the next forty years.
