EPISODE VII: THE AFICIONADO REVIEW

NO SPOILERS!

Coming to the screen with verve, vitality and bundles of enthusiasm- each frame clearly and lovingly thought out by director J.J. Abrams, THE FORCE AWAKENS is a triumph of heart-felt escapism and certainly a very, very welcome return to that galaxy far, far away. Its bam, bam, bam from the get-go as it sends its all ages audiences on a rollercoaster ride through an invigorating two and a bit hours, given additional and heightened emotional resonance via John Williams classy score, introducing a tremendous new group of young stars in the process: I challenge anyone not to fall in love with Daisy Ridley the moment they see her as the tomboy scavenger Rey, whose dreams of the stars and a life beyond her meagre existence become realised in the most unexpected way, nor cheer along John Boyega's spirited but vulnerable stormtrooper turned unlikely hero who needs a purpose as the do-the-right-thing Finn, or raise a salute to the flying ace skills of Oscar Isaac's daring hotshot pilot Poe Dameron and his irresistible blend of humour and loyalty that is his BB-8 droid- well, I want one- now! But the genuine standout for me had to be Adam Driver, as the troubled and psychotically destructive Kylo Ren- Driver is a real film star in the making here, clearly raising the bar in onscreen co-developing a villain long-term worthy of Darth Vader.

And then there's the original "Classic" cast whom we've all cared about and now joyously celebrate the return of: Carrie Fisher's warmth and renewed strength as General Leia Organa, whilst Harrison Ford's Han Solo is older, crankier but just as heroic and crafty as ever- the actor totally superb from the get-go, slipping effortlessly back into character and sharing some wonderful camaraderie with the wookiee Chewbacca, both of whom are given new depths and new problems to become immersed in. Oh yes, let's not forget Mark Hamill, either... but you'll just have to wait and see what happens there- his participation in THE FORCE AWAKENS clearly being part of a huge new game plan for future films, within a whole plethora of well-thought out surprises bringing freshness and charm to this next trilogy chapter of the franchise.

Creator George Lucas's incredible and fertile imagination, alongside his ability to think out of the box, is certainly missed in places: his Prequels may be derided in some quarters, but long-term, as part of the overall saga, they bring intriguing subconscious underpinnings and depth to certain aspects witnessed within THE FORCE AWAKENS, and don't let any naysayers tells you otherwise! (Especially linked to Kylo Ren's unique exploration of Darth Vader.). But, to his credit, Abrams, generally regarded as being a director in the best traditions of Steven Spielberg than the more elegant and documentarian Lucas, pays tribute to the STAR WARS creator's house style beyond just screen wipes and opening title crawls, and in a pleasing way that's much commended. Additionally, the story of THE FORCE AWAKENS does have moments that feel like STAR WARS Greatest Hits  - especially with the Starkiller weapon- and in much the same way that JURASSIC WORLD often felt like a re-tooled for a new audience variation on the original JURASSIC PARK. But I expected such a move here, however, aware that such a nostalgic partial re-working was necessary in order to capture that box office-vital next generation of die-hard fans- the new LUCASFILM/DISNEY team having succeeded admirably and lucratively in my book. Let's hope Rian Johnson's VIII and Colin Trevorrow's IX get to explore and build even further, and even more satisfyingly, on the huge potential that these new characters and their arcs have showed with their richly enjoyable first outing.

AFICIONADO RATING: Tears of joy, with a sprinkling of sadness, in this bright and shiny Christmas present for STAR WARS fans. 4 out of 5

EPISODE VII: LOST AND FOUND!

SPOILER ALERT! Despite making the most of the skills taught him by Master Yoda on Dagobah, the power of the Dark Side and Darth Vader's immense and aggressive fighting prowess proves too much for Luke Skywalker, losing his hand and his father's lightsaber during the climactic duel within the depths of Cloud City.

Leia receives the lightsaber from Maz Kanata.

Thirty-five years on, with THE FORCE AWAKENS, that lost now found lightsaber will prove to be an all-important plot point in the film, linked to the deliberately enigmatic question of where Luke Skywalker has disappeared to. In a recent interview, Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that there will be a flashback, or Forceback, in the movie, presumably showing us what happened to Luke after the events of JEDI, how his lightsaber was discovered and made its way across the universe to a unique destination and "home", and how the fearsome Knights of Ren, seen so ominously in the trailer, have come into being. We're also assuming that this Forceback is initiated via the mysterious powers of the diminutive Maz Kanata, and possibly linked to the awakening of Rey's potential powers as a Jedi-to-be.

Fans of the lightsaber, and the epic battles over the years shown on screen and superbly choreographed off of it, will be thrilled with the upcoming US ESPN channel's upcoming documentary on the subject, hosted by no one better than Mark Hamill, who studied the art of Kendo used primarily within the lightsabers duels of the Classic Trilogy, now being resurrected for EPISODE VII.

Here's the additional US press blurb:

Mark Hamill holds the lightsaber. Image: ESPN.

Examining the sport and athleticism behind the choreography and training utilized in the making of Star Wars lightsaber duels, Star Wars: Evolution of the Lightsaber Duel, hosted by Mark Hamill, will air Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The documentary will precede the Friday, Dec. 18, launch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in U.S. theaters.

“Lightsaber duels from the Star Wars films are some of cinema’s most recognized battles and an iconic part of the most popular movie franchise of all time,” said Craig Lazarus, ESPN vice president, SportsCenter & News, Storytelling Units.

“We will take viewers on a unique journey that examines the connection of these duels to sports and their evolution, from the original trilogy through the prequels, and now to Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” said Lazarus. “Viewers will see the transition from fencing and samurai swordplay in the original films to an increased focus on martial arts and the sport of kendo.”

For the documentary, ESPN traveled to the 2015 Kendo World Championships in Japan to gather interviews and information to explain the genesis of kendo and how it applies to Star Wars lightsaber duels. Hamill, who reprises his role of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, lived in Japan for his last two years of high school and is very familiar with kendo.

“I really feel that kendo has informed so much of what we have done in the films it is about time that it gets some long-overdue recognition,” Hamill said.

Mark films his special introduction.

"What people don’t realize is how much goes into what appears to be just minutes on the screen,” Hamill said. “The elaborate choreography for the actual fight is done on several different sets over a period of weeks and then it is edited down to what you see on the screens, so I am happy people are able to see the amount of work that goes into it.”

The program also will include behind-the-scenes video of actor John Boyega, who plays Finn in the new film, as he trains for a lightsaber battle scene. Boyega is interviewed for the program as is his kendo trainer, Paul Vincent.

SC Featured also traveled to England to interview actor Ian McDiarmid, who portrayed Emperor Palpatine in previous Star Wars films and Nick Gillard, kendo expert and former Star Wars stunt man and choreographer.

New interviews with film director/producer J.J. Abrams and Jonathan W. Rinzler, Lucasfilm historian, are also part of the documentary along with rare, behind-the-scenes footage from the Lucasfilm archive.

On Oct. 19, the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted during halftime of ESPN’s Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, with tickets for the movie going on sale immediately afterward.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

Lucasfilm and visionary director J.J. Abrams join forces to take you back again to a galaxy far, far away as Star Wars returns to the big screen with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk are producing with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan & J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt.

BACK TO THE FUTURE! 'STAR WARS' IN THE UK - 1977

Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker make a STAR WARS promotional spot in Manchester, 1977.

As THE FORCE AWAKENS debuts onto British cinemas this week, lets remember that exciting, still one-of-a-kind Xmas of 1977 in the UK, when the original STAR WARS made such a stellar, if long overdue, arrival- first in London cinemas then into the suburbs and across the country by early 1978. To say British audiences welcomed it with open arms would be an understatement- the feel good movie of the decade was a genuine tonic for a country suffering political and economic woes, and an amazing new step into the worlds of science fiction and space fantasy, and cinematic storytelling in general, that left everyone beguiled, amused, thrilled and extraordinarily happy!
