'STAR WARS' AT 40: THE FIRST X-WING CASUALTY!

The Rebel attack runs on the Death Star surface continue with daring aplomb, but Red Six (aka Porkins) is the first of their X-wing fighter casualties after his craft has a technical problem that soon sees him and it turn into a fireball.

Popular actor William Hootkins, despite concerns over the on set pyrotechnics of the effects boys, gamely let himself be "blown up" on the cockpit set at Elstree Studios in July 1976. Originally, Porkins and Biggs attack run occurred in the script whilst the TIE fighter attack was actually starting, rather than in the finished film, where the death happened beforehand.
