Making sure the Wampa attack on Luke Skywalker was effectively realized on screen would mean the use of a specially created monster arm and taloned paw on a stick that could be directed down on Mark Hamill atop the two Tauntaun creatures used on location.

Originally the creature was to have been able to navigate itself under the ice to attack its prey- like a snow shark of sorts, as seen in this alternate/unused footage below...
