AN 'EMPIRE' AT 40: A TIME FOR REST...

The unexpected Spring 1979 fire at Elstree Studios that wrecked its Stage 3 may have caused numerous production and scheduling headaches, as well as the loss of larger set space filming to The Empire Strikes Back that would instead be allocated to perfectionist Stanley Kubrick's ever-long filming of horror epic, The Shining, but most of Production Designer Norman Reynolds' lovely Art Deco-inspired sets for the interiors of Bespin would make their way to the screen successfully, even if curtailed in ambition. The lovely rest quarters for Han, Leia and Chewie would be a notable standout, as seen in this image taken during rehearsals and similar to one used in publicity during 1980.
