Confident of Anakin's skills as an intuitive pilot, and knowing how heavily the Force is imbued within him via a prior discovered, off the chart Midi-chlorian count, Qui-Gon, with Jar Jar Binks in tow, seals his prior financial deal with the greedy Watto for the boy's entry into the Boonta Eve pod race, alongside some sly use of the Force to win Anakin's freedom once his victory is confirmed. Though impressed with his slave, Watto has instead gambled on the dangerous and cheating Sebulba - Anakin's rival, confidently expecting the Dug to win, with Qui-Gon's Nubian-built ship as part of the extra profits!
A selection of life size prop pod racers built for use in Tunisia would also be staged on the partial hangar set at Leavesden, with ILM model shots/set extensions created/superimposed in post production.
