The primary Yoda used in this sequence was a very basic puppet with likely very slight remote control movements, which was fixed into Luke's backpack for the long shot scenes.
Several more sequences of Luke in training had been scripted and planned, including his once more battling flying remotes (which may have been partially filmed with Mark Hamill's reaction shots using his lightsaber blade), but due to lack of time and money these were aborted.
