CLASSIC ART: THE DENZIENS OF MOS EISLEY
Here's a great piece of McQuarrie artwork- from his later co-collaboration with author Kevin J. Anderson for THE ILLUSTRATED STAR WARS UNIVERSE art/book project from 1995- that's rarely seen online, showing another side of the streets of Tatooine's infamous Mos Eisley spaceport, where aliens of dubious distinction and morality mingle seamlessly with the evil tyranny of the Imperial Stormtroopers.
In my mind's eye, amongst the alien noises and Stormtroopers crackling voice mikes, I can just hear John Williams atmospheric Cantina Band music playing away in the far distance!
With thanks to Colin Kenworthy for the image.

That is not a preproduction painting from Star Wars. All of the paintings from that era were signed by Ralph as "R.McQUARRIE". This is in fact one of the paintings he published many years later for the book "The Illustrated Star Wars Universe" which he co-authored with Kevin J. Anderson (published in 1995). Ralph completed about 26 new "Star Wars" paintings just for that book, and this is one of them. You can tell because he signed those newer paintings as either just "R.McQ." like this one or as "R.McQUARRIE/93" on a few others.
Actually, I think this painting may have originally been completed for use in the children's book "The Mos Eisley Cantina Pop-up Book", but I don't have a copy of that to confirm it.
Cheers for that-have amended the blog info. Best, Scott.
